Die With Me (1/?)
i.
The place was dark and smelt like dead bodies and old fruit. Hyukjae walks along the long tunnel, thick boot sloshing in dirty water. He turns sharply at one point and then again and again, weaving deeper and deeper into the dark labyrinth, until finally he reaches one of the dead ends. He knocks on a piece of concrete- third from the right, seventh from the top- and taps on it rhythmically and waits. The concrete wall slides open and Hyukjae steps into a relatively large room with further tunnels branching off.
“You’re late Hyukjae,” a deep voice mutters, but not aggressively.
Hyukjae turns to see Kangin, his large form towering over a small seat, looking much worse than last time they had been together. There were dark circles under his eyes and a storm brewing in them, the jagged scar across his cheek more pronounced in the bright light.
“Are you okay, Kangin?”
Before the other can answer, two figures emerged from one of the tunnels on the right and Hyukjae nodded at Hankyung and Siwon who waved in greeting. Hyukjae noticed that Hankyung was hobbling slightly, his left leg seemingly too tender to put too much pressure on. Ryeowook appeared with Henry, the two chatting animatedly, but judging from the redness of his eyes, Hyukjae knows Ryeowook had just been crying. Heechul strolls in with Kibum besides him, not so much as having a conversation, but simple talking at the younger man. Kyuhyun walked in and immediately seated his tall slim frame in the very corner. Donghae appeared last, with Zhoumi and Yesung and Hyukjae flashes him a small smile.
When Kangin spoke, it was somber and quiet, “As you should all probably know by now, we lost Shindong today…”
There is a brief pause, “Shindong was an integral part of this team and a highly efficient diplomat. But above all, he was a friend and family. We must mourn for our lost friend, but we must also keep up our spirits so we can fight on. If you let your emotions get the better of you, you’ll be vulnerable to attack.”
Kangin looks around at them, at each of them, “Kyuhyun says that they’re planning a raid on a couple of houses downtown. Yesung, Ryeowook, Donghae and Henry, you four go down there and evacuate the people if you can. Kyuhyun will keep you informed. Heechul, you’re on command today. Hankyung, Siwon, there’s an errand I want you two to run for me. Hyukjae and Zhoumi, if you two can do a sweep near the Entertainment Centre and the rest of the black district?”
With a nod, they all left to their own tasks.
They don’t say goodbye, they never do; it always sounds like they’re never coming back.
Yesung is walking along, his gun in his hands, Ryeowook following close behind him. Donghae and Henry were rounding the block from the next street so they can meet in the middle, ensuring the parameter was clear. He shakes the hair out of his face and thinks he should just cut it short like Kangin. But then he remembers clearly that Ryeowook had told Hankyung that he looks better with longer hair, how it was mysterious and sexy. The younger man had said it teasingly, pulling the other’s leg as he does a faux-swoon, but Yesung had taken it to heart (he takes everything Ryeowook says to heart). Ryeowook was walking quietly, steps light and his eyes alert. Despite his fragile appearance, Yesung knew Ryeowook wasn’t as delicate and weak as he looked. Sneaking glances at the younger man, Yesung’s stomach twisted when Ryeowook unconsciously bit down on his lower lip. Ever since Hankyung had come back with a dirty and terrifyingly thin Ryeowook all those years ago, Yesung had found himself more and more infatuated with the beautiful boy. He had tried to express his feelings, but Ryeowook never seemed to understand what he was trying to say. Yesung knew that the younger man spent a lot of time with Hankyung and Kyuhyun, and he sometimes wonders if perhaps Ryeowook already likes someone else. But then the possessive part of him rears and Yesung tells him that Ryeowook belongs to him and no one else, he’d make sure of it. No one can love Ryeowook like he can.
Kangin stands in the shadows, smoking a badly rolled cigarette, another half a dozen sitting at his feet. He watches and he waits, his eyes staring at everything and nothing. Then a graceful figure emerges from the building and Kangin’s eyes darken at the slight limp in his stride. The man catches sight of him, body stiffening, but he nevertheless joins Kangin in the shadows quietly.
“Didn’t I tell you not to come here?”
“Teukie…” He reaches up to stroke the other’s face gently and Leeteuk closes his eyes tightly, lashes fluttering.
“Stop it. If you care for me, stop it. Don’t…don’t give me hope. There’s nothing you can do, so leave me alone.”
Kangin pulls Leeteuk into a hug and rubs his hands down the other’s slender back, “Teukie…stop working here. Come with m-”
Leeteuk shoves him off, stronger than he looks, “Stop it! I’m not going to let you die for me! They’ll hunt me down, kill you and then rip me apart. I want to live.”
Kangin growls and punches the wall; Leeteuk doesn’t flinch. “You call this living?! You come here everyday and let strangers fuck you and you call-”
Leeteuk glares at him, beautiful eyes blazing, “I want to be alive, ok?! I’m not a fucking hero like you, Kangin. I don’t want to die, and this keeps me alive, so stop trying to get me killed!” His voice softens sadly, “There’s no point being happy when you’re dead.”
Kangin lets out a breath, “Okay…fine, stay alive then, if you’re okay with selling your body, then why should I care?!”
He shoves a packet of food at Leeteuk and then walks off.
Leeteuk clutches at the package and slides down the wall, tears brimming.
I’m dirty, Kangin…I’m not worth it…
Zhoumi steals a glance at Kyuhyun before he departs with Hyukjae and he hopes his face doesn’t betray the jerk he feels in his heart as he sees the dark eyed, usually so against body contact, giving Ryeowook and Heechul a hug before leaning in and whispering something in Hankyung’s ear, that makes the Chinese doctor smile.
It was always the same, it’s always one of the others.
Why can’t you look at me Kui Xian?
Hyukjae and Zhoumi had decided to split up so to cover the grounds faster, before the sun set. The day was no sanctuary here, but the nights were almost always worse. Hyukjae always thinks he can hear more screams when it’s dark. Plus, despite knowing each other for almost a year, Hyukjae found he had little to say to the quiet Chinese man. He liked him well enough, that mega-watt smile was irresistible, budt Hyukjae just can’t seem to find the same ease of communication with Zhoumi as he so easily did with Hankyung or Henry.
There’s a scream from one of the alleys and Hyukjae quickly runs forward and glances inwards. There’s a girl lying on the ground and another man on top of her, pulling at her clothes roughly. Hyukjae feels disgust that this wasn’t an Official, but just a man giving into his animalistic desires. He pulls the man off the girl, but before he can act, a shot rings out and the man drops from his grasp, dead.
Hyukjae jerks around and freezes at the three men dressed in Official uniform at the mouth of the alley, guns now pointed straight at him.
