Or Maybe Imaginary Adults Who Look Like Children To U.S. Customs Officials, Who Cares, Lock Him Up

This happened a week ago, but I just found out: the Handley case is ending with a guilty plea, meaning that there won't be a challenge to the PROTECT Act, and thus unless another challenge surfaces it will still be permissible to turn off the First ( Read more... )

Yeah, that's the thing. I honestly don't know if the defendant in this case is a creepy perv (I gather his mom stalwartly defends him, so that's something), or just someone who likes collecting comics of all kinds, including some edgy fare. The law doesn't care; if officials judge it "obscene", it doesn't matter if his interest is prurient or artistic or anything. He still gets up to 15 years in prison and lifelong restrictions as a registered sex offender, because of some art that the state interpreted as harmful.

That's one of the aspects that really offends me, the idea of the state determining how art should be perceived.

Late to this show, but from what I understand and read, the majority of his shit wasn't particularly loli focused. Out of every dvd, vhs, image, etc I think they only found 150 (low end?) images that could be construed as such. I mean, I heard the reason why he got called back from parole was over some Gaogaigar ad. Apparently "Super Robots" is Japanese code for pedo. Of course one of the things he did get nabbed was for doujin by the famous shitty dick nipples dude so I don't know what to say about his interests.

Though really, what can I say, I read Shintaro Kago and Suehiro Maruo all the time.

BTW Noticed that Cave Story is finally getting a wiiware release. Have you been in contact with Pixel or Nicalis at all? Since you're like, in the biz now I was curious as to how that industry looks at fan based translation efforts and such since the Scan/sub scene and the manga publishing scene always seem to have some major beef.
