their cycle is nothing short of screwed up but at least they're consistent.
Saturday.
“You guys must be close since you’re roommates, right?” Hyoyeon blinks for a moment, temporarily blinded by the camera’s flash, before the reporter’s question registers in her mind.
“What? Oh,” her gaze slides over to where Jessica is smiling with Tiffany, posing for a picture. The camera flashes again and Hyoyeon tries her hardest not to blink this time - so she can Jessica’s features illuminated by the light.
“Hyoyeon ssi?”
Hyoyeon snaps out of her trance and gives the reporter a perfectly trained smile. “Yes, I would say that we’re perfectly close.” Jessica is walking away, hand in hand with Tiffany. “Perfectly close.”
The camera flashes again.
Sunday.
A DVD rental bounces on the mattress, right in front of where Hyoyeon is sitting and reading. She stares up to see an agitated Jessica in her nightgown. Hyoyeon raises an eyebrow. Jessica shrugs in response. Putting her book aside, Hyoyeon picks up the DVD and reads the title.
“The Virgin Suicides?” she asks incredulously when she’s finished looking at the Korean translation. Jessica shrugs again.
“It has Kirsten Dunst in it,” she says simply. When Hyoyeon doesn’t budge, Jessica climbs on the bed next to her and places her head on Hyoyeon’s shoulder. “Please.”
So Hyoyeon pops the DVD in the player and prays to God that Seohyun or Taeyeon don’t come into the living room. Jessica puts a bag of buttered popcorn into the microwave and presents it to Hyoyeon, paper bag warm, popcorn golden yellow.
“Stop trying to butter me up,” Hyoyeon sulks but takes a handful of popcorn anyway. “I was at a really good part.” Jessica smiles a wan smile and turns her head into the TV as the opening credits pop up. About ten minutes into the movie, Hyoyeon winces when she sees the youngest sister throw herself out of the window. She grabs the remote and presses ‘pause.’
“This is an extremely morbid movie,” she announces. Jessica’s eyes sparkle.
“You haven’t even seen the worst bit.” Hyoyeon blanches and Jessica seizes the opportunity to steal the remote back. She presses ‘play.’
“I love it.”
Monday.
Hyoyeon’s alarm rings at 4:45 am sharp, “Tell Me Your Wish” blasting through the room. She slams her hand on the ‘dismiss’ button before groggily making her way into the bathroom. She opens the door and doesn’t even notice Jessica seated on the toilet until the other girl stands up and pulls the Hyoyeon’s hair tie out.
Hair whipping around her face, Hyoyeon stares at the blank-faced Jessica with wild surprised eyes. “What are you - what are you doing here?” Jessica just stares. Hyoyeon rubs the sleep out of her eyes and stares at Jessica’s face more closely. There are noticeable bags under them. “Are you crazy? Did you not sleep after the movie?” Hyoyeon demands.
Jessica doesn’t answer but Hyoyeon doesn’t need one. She swears to herself and turns on the cold water in the sink. She splashes some on Jessica’s face. Jessica splutters. Hyoyeon takes no heed of Jessica’s half-hearted glare and starts to push the older girl out of the bathroom.
“Go on, I need to take a shower. Go eat something or - “
“I’m taking one too,” Jessica says abruptly and Hyoyeon’s too bewildered by that statement to realize that Jessica has wandered back inside and has started to take her clothes off.
“W-Wait!” A topless Jessica turns to stare at Hyoyeon with hauntingly hollow eyes. A lump forms in Hyoyeon’s throat and she looks away, cheeks burning in shame. She closes the door tightly and locks it. “…Just this once then.”
Jessica doesn’t respond but she walks over to Hyoyeon and pulls down her shorts.
Hyoyeon puts the water as hot as it can go. She slaps Jessica’s hand away every time the other girl tries to lower the water temperature.
Hyoyeon wants it to burn.
Tuesday.
Hyoyeon tries not to drool as Sunny places a serving of beef on her plate. Sunny giggles when she catches Hyoyeon’s expression and Hyoyeon has the decency to blush before she shoves her chopsticks in the saucy meat and shoves it in her mouth. She closes her eyes in bliss as the rich taste embraces her taste buds.
Caught up in her food euphoria, she doesn’t hear the footsteps behind her until a familiar pair of arms drape across her shoulders. “I see you’ve taken eating lessons from Yoona,” Jessica drawls slowly, voice low and raspy in Hyoyeon’s ear. Hyoyeon can’t help the shiver that runs down her spine but continues to eat as if nothing’s wrong.
“Yoona eats beautifully,” she comments. Yoona stops her shoveling and beams at Hyoyeon, meat juice dripping down her chin. Jessica wrinkles her nose but leans over and snatches Hyoyeon’s fork. Hyoyeon barely has time to protest before Jessica stabs the utensil into the meat and begins to gobble the rest of her lunch down.
Hyoyeon frowns. “No one gave you permission to eat my food.” Jessica shrugs and continues to chew, face still dangerously close to Hyoyeon’s. She swallows and tilts her head to give Hyoyeon a kiss on the cheek.
“I don’t need permission,” she whispers airily before straightening and flouncing away.
The whole table is silent as Hyoyeon stares blankly at her empty plate.
Wednesday.
Sweat drips down Hyoyeon’s forehead as she starts the music again. She turns to face the other girls and begins to clap to set up the count for them. Eight faces stare at her determinedly - and then they dance, Hyoyeon’s scrutinizing gaze on them the whole time.
Yuri is nearly flawless as usual, Seohyun’s improved greatly, and Taeyeon…
Hyoyeon bites back a sigh when she sees the leader stumble a little during one of the turn transitions. She motions for the others to continue as she walks over to Taeyeon and pulls the shorter girl aside. “Taeyeon,” she starts and lets her hands rest on Taeyeon’s hips so she can move them accordingly. “Try balancing your weight on your feet instead of putting it all on one foot. Okay?”
Taeyeon nods quickly and Hyoyeon smiles. From the corner of her eye she sees Jessica glowering.
She raises an eyebrow. What? Jessica sniffs and turns her head away from her. Hyoyeon is baffled for a moment but is brought back to reality when Taeyeon asks her about something else.
Later, when they’re all walking out of the practice room, Jessica grabs Hyoyeon’s wrist, tight and angry. Hyoyeon raises her eyebrow again. Jessica’s face is expressionless but her eyes are smoldering with anger.
“What’s your problem?”
“What’s your problem?” Jessica hisses back. “You were all over Taeyeon - “
“Correction,” Hyoyeon interrupts, not wanting to bother with another one of Jessica’s little bitch fits. “I was helping her with her dancing. That’s kind of what I do here.”
Jessica’s grip on her wrist only tightens. She leans closer to Hyoyeon. “You’re mine, you know,” she says in a low voice.
Something tightens at the pit of Hyoyeon’s stomach and she says nothing. Jessica waits another moment for Hyoyeon to respond. When she sees that the other girl won’t be talking any time soon, she releases her wrist and walks away, making a disgusted noise as she goes.
Hyoyeon’s arm falls back to her side limply, not unlike a rag doll.
Thursday.
Hyoyeon raises her head and stares at the clock for the seventh time. 3:23 am. Her head swerves over to Jessica’s bed.
It’s empty.
She sighs and sinks back down into the mattress, throwing the covers over her head. She’s not getting any sleep tonight.
Friday.
“Unni,” Seohyun asks anxiously. Hyoyeon grunts in response, doesn’t bother to lift her head up from the newspaper. “Unni,” Seohyun says again, a tinge of exasperation mixed in with her worry. “Aren’t you tired of this?”
Seohyun’s words make Hyoyeon’s insides freeze and the coldness spreads out to her fingertips, numbing her. “What are you talking about?”
Seohyun fidgets before lowering her tone to a whisper. “You and…Jessica unni. Aren’t you tired of fighting? Shouldn’t you guys make up already? This happens-”
“Every week,” Hyoyeon finishes tiredly. She goes back to her newspaper. She’s had enough of this.
“Unni!”
Shouldn’t we make up indeed, Hyoyeon thinks rather bitterly before turning her mind and her heart off.
Saturday.
As Hyoyeon helps zip up the back of Seohyun’s dress, she can hear Taeyeon and Jessica talking in the background. Jessica has a firm hold on Taeyeon’s arm and Taeyeon’s smiling brightly, too brightly.
“We should definitely practice together more. A duet maybe,” Jessica suggests slyly. Taeyeon’s face lights up at the thought and she begins to babble in excitement. Hyoyeon stares at them for a moment.
Jessica doesn’t look her way.
“Typical,” she murmurs quietly and brushes aside Seohyun’s concerned comments.
Sunday.
Something cold and wet splashes on Hyoyeon’s face and she wakes up to see a DVD cover in her face. She reads “Requiem for a Dream.” She sighs.
“I’m tired.”
Jessica smiles. “I know.” Hyoyeon grabs the DVD and slowly sits up. She looks at Jessica and is tempted to say something, anything.
“Popcorn?” is the only thing that comes out of her mouth. Jessica’s smile widens.
“The usual.”
Hyoyeon has a feeling this is going to be another morbid movie.
