summary: anri's never considered herself a princess.
Anri never considered herself a princess. Princesses were elegant, beautiful, and most of all, loved by all. Though Kida-kun insisted she was the most gorgeous creature in all the land - exaggerated sweeping hand gestures included - and urged Ryuugamine-kun to imagine her in a long, white, frilly dress, fit for royalty.
Ryuugamine-kun’s eyes glazed over for a moment and his cheeks turned pink. But as soon as Kida-kun laughed at him, yelling something about the springtime romance of youth, Ryuugamine-kun snapped and tackled the chortling blonde with an outraged “Masaomi!”
Anri watches them wrestle with a small smile, surprisingly relieved that the subject of princesses have been lifted. The boys spend the rest of the walk home arguing about small things, Kida-kun’s tone jovial and Ryuugamine’s tone flustered, just as usual.
Besides, Anri thinks to herself when she’s home alone, princesses weren’t designed to take love forcibly from others. They earn it themselves, just the way they are.
She slides a finger down the cool wood of Saika’s sheath and tries to suppress the shudder that threatens to shake her body.
It’s not like any other females in Anri’s life are princesses either. Harima-san is like a demented fairy, perfectly content to live on her love for herself as well as her love for Yagiri-kun. Yagiri-kun’s aura is scary, almost like an orge’s, so Anri supposes a demented fairy fits. Those girls that always bother her, with their faux wings and heavy makeup, are sharp little pixies who have their own strange ideas about love, clinging to goblins that shower them with money and gifts.
Then there’s Haruna-san. She’s probably the worst of them all, a witch who was tricked by a fake, a witch who believed in a man that didn’t love her back. Then, she forced that sort of fake love on everyone else, because of a voice that didn’t really exist.
But if Haruna-san is a witch, Anri doesn’t want to think about what she must be. Instead, she focuses on Ryuugamine-kun’s shy smile and Kida-kun’s bold laugh, and tries to relax.
Anri’s mother was a queen once, regal, gentle, and kind. But her mother made a mistake and didn’t marry a just king, instead she got tied to a twisted warlock that made her mother turn to that voice, made her mother fight when queens weren’t supposed to fight.
It was that, that ultimately led to her mother’s end. Proper queens can’t fight like knights but her mother tried. She tried.
Anri reasons it’s her mother’s fault for not following the proper storyline. At least, that’s what she tells herself to keep the pitch-black and blood-red nightmares at bay.
Celty-san is unlike anything Anri’s ever seen before. She’s something called a Dulahan which puts her in a class unlike her own. Dulahans bring forth death which is something Anri can associate with Celty-san, but at the same time Celty-san is confident, classy, and strong. And Anri’s seen what Celty-san’s face looks like. She’s beautiful too.
Celty talks about Kishitani-san sometimes and Anri knows they’re in love. To anybody else, it’s a shock, but for Anri, it makes sense. Even if she’s not sure how.
It will depend on the person, Celty types to her one day. Anri knows Celty has her own qualms about love, though hers are more direct; what with the conflicts of being an out-of-this-world being in love with a regular human.
Anri holds back the ideas of princesses and princes. Celty-san is a warrior who has the power to carve out her own story, totally unlike Anri who’s still held back by her secret childish yearnings. If she were to tell Celty-san any of that, Celty would call her silly.
And she knows it’s silly, to want to be normal, to want to find love. Anri needs to remember that she’s not a princess.
You have Saika, is the only thing she tells herself before shutting off the rest of the whispers in her head.
Princesses are the ones that get rescued by gallant knights and handsome princes. Anri’s never experienced that but knows this fact well.
However when Kadota-san comes to her in concern, telling her about a troublesome new gang formed of some punks at her school, how Kida-kun and Ryuugamine-kun tried to go and talk to them, about how they’ve been gone long, too long, something in Anri sparks.
I have Saika.
Anri holds the blade firm in her hand as she walks down the alley, thinking of Kida-kun’s vivid presence and Ryuugamine-kun’s gentle demeanor. She thinks of the smiles they give her and the spark in her grows stronger.
She exhales a short breath when she’s in front of the door of the beat-down warehouse before slicing said door in half.
Anri’s never considered herself a princess. But, seeing as now she has two princes to save, two princes who give her love without a care in the world, she doesn’t really think she needs to be one. Not anymore.
