Here is a Paul who goes to bat for Percy and looks beneath the circumstantial evidence around his delinquency to fight hard for him. The author paints Paul with perceptiveness about people and an understanding nature, showing us why he makes a good match for Sally and her demigod son. There plenty of moments referenced from canon as well as added in, and all of it develops the growing father-son relationship between Paul and Percy in a very natural way. A strong bond is shown to grow between them without it seeming cheesy or forces.
