Summary: Samm and Kira share a moment after the apocalypse. Post-Ruins.
Notes: This was a random snippet of fic from two years ago that I found in my WIP folder, and … well, I decided it might as well get rounded off.
He'd found her in his dreams so many times that Samm thought at first this was just another one of them. He let out his breath in a long, slow sigh, lingering on the sweet sensation of holding Kira close.
His brain catalogued every moment: Kira stirring. Her fingers playing idly across his chest.
'Hey,' she said sleepily.
Samm blinked. His fantasy visions generally didn't speak. Nor were they ever accompanied by a numbness in his shoulder that indicated the presence of a prolonged weight.
This was real.
Kira was real.
A smile spread across Samm's face. 'Hey,' he said.
Kira lifted her head off his shoulder and propped herself up on one elbow. 'You're smiling,' she teased. 'If you're not careful, you're going to lose your Partial poker face.'
'I thought you disliked the poker face.'
'Sort of. I guess. I like knowing how you feel. But since you taught me how to sense it on the link … now I have two sources telling me you're happy.'
'Yes,' Samm said simply. He let the rest of his thoughts flow out on the link: how he'd dreamed of her so many times, it was hard to believe this wasn't just another one; how lucky he was to have her here, alive and in his arms; the way his heart felt like it would burst when she'd told him yesterday, 'I love you, Samm, I do.'
It couldn't all translate through the data, but Kira evidently got the gist of his emotions. Her face lit up. 'That's amazing. I'm not even sure which feelings of yours I'm sharing and which are my own …' She leaned in to kiss him. 'I can't believe we made it to where we are now either.'
'The odds weren't great,' admitted Samm. 'Especially as we had to lose and find each other twice. Let's not risk a third.'
Kira snuggled up against him. Their journey was far from over. Although he'd made it all the way from Denver, and she'd survived facing down Armin, there was still a long road ahead to New Jersey. And who knew what they still had to face from the nuclear fallout at White Plains?
But for now, Kira was here, and she'd chosen him. That was enough for Samm.
