As one of my favorite quotes goes, "There's no love, it's the trick of the brain, it's the combination of chemicals and hormones." Nothing more, nothing less. Love is merely a perception. I love my friends, I love my family. But as you said, it's fondness and affection. You haven't become cold hearted my dear. You've become cold hearted when you are apathetic to the pain of the ones you care about most. You're just pondering a question that most of us do at one point or another.
