You reminisce those days - sunny afternoons, clear blue skies and him.
He would hold your hand and talk about his family, his school and you felt like you were his best friend. You would play games, share stories and make promises, all with him. He would hug you - one of his warm, comforting hugs - and he would smile brightly at you. His smile was brighter than a thousands suns, and his rare frowns were darker than black holes. You loved the way he looked at you - like you were more than a precocious child. Like you were just a boy that needed a friend.
His name was (Lee) Sungmin. He was now fifteen years old. He liked pink, had a black belt in taekwondo and played the guitar. His best friend ever since preschool was you, (Cho) Kyuhyun.
Then he left; he said “Goodbye”, but for you, it wasn't good at all. You missed your best friend, and you would cherish every phone call. But as time passed, he no longer called, and you immersed yourself in computer games. Computer games weren't like reality. There was always a 'Game Over', but there was also always a 'Try Again'. If only you could keep trying again; if only you were a better friend, a worthy friend, then maybe Sungmin may have stayed. You isolated yourself from others, because you wanted time to recover.
As time passed you made new friends with a bandage over your heart; you began to forget him - you tried to replace those memories with new ones. Best friends come and go, you thought, old memories could be painted over by new ones.
Unfortunately he ruined your plans and visited you on New Year's Eve. He smiled like he used to, wearing the most ridiculously pink jacket you've ever seen. He introduced himself to your family again who were happy to have an old friend join in on the celebrations. He hadn't changed much since you last saw him, only a haircut. You feel guilty for wanting to remove him from your memories.
He sleeps in your bed, your fingers intertwined with his; his and your heart beating to the same tune. He lays awake with you, counting down to the New Year.
“Do you remember our promise?” He asks quietly.
You remain quiet because you don't remember.
He chuckles and tells you, “We promised that we would start every year with each other, no matter how far apart we may be.”
You smile, because you're elated he's finally with you, because he's always wanted to be with you.
When you think he's asleep, you kiss his lips for the first time. They're soft and taste like toothpaste, but it's definitely Sungmin you're tasting.
You whisper “Happy Birthday” and hold him close. This time you're not afraid if he leaves because you know he'll always come back.
