Done with exams (I think I did okay despite drawing all over my notes) so on to next post! I've noticed as I go along that I get more vague with my notes 0_0. Silly lazy me.
In Canada we most certainly do have karaoke. And I know it must be in the states too because I've seen similar places in american movies. It isn't particularly popular though; the first time I went to what I have dubbed 'north-american karaoke' was this year. Basically, its a bar with an open mic, karaoke machine, and a book of song codes that is rarely updated. Asian karaoke is much more popular in Toronto in my experience. That is probably a question of sampling though. Who do I know? Students in university mostly. 50% of the population of which are brown, 40% are asian, 10% are everything else. That's clearly just a guess, but the moral of the story is, most of my casual acquaintances aren't caucasian, so... maybe north american karaoke is more popular with them? Or, not in a super-multi-cultural city like Toronto
( ... )
Yeah, we have Karaoke in bars, for everyone in the bar to see, but it's not what Japan would think of when they think 'karaoke'. They would just call that terrifying. XD
It's ridiculously rare to find 'karaoke boxes' (Asian Karaoke) and although I've been to one in Seattle and L.A., it was no where near the level as the multi-lingual, remote finder karaoke they have in Korea, China, and Japan. Like you said it's all in one outdated book, you're in front of strangers, and the background music is pathetic >_<;;;
Japan's karaoke is like hanging out at the mall for us. I think it's probably because movie theaters are so expensive (almost three times more) that instead they do karaoke to hang out. It's a completely different karaoke culture.
My point was that out karaoke wouldn't be what they thought of as karaoke, and it's not all that common or popular in North America either. ^_^
Ahh, that's funny because while I really don't remember how much it cost to do karaoke in Japan (usually I wasn't paying...) I think it's just the opposite in Toronto. The only reason we don't do karaoke more is because it's so expensive. An evening in a medium size karaoke 'box' will be more expensive for each individual than an evening of dinner + movie. That's before you add in drinks or food you might buy at the place.
As for rare... There are quite a few Asian karaoke places in Toronto/surrounding area. I can think of 4 that I've been in/walked past. So, when you're next back in North America, cross the boarder to visit and you can your full fix of Asian style karaoke here XD
Because middle and high schoolers do it after class, it's really cheap. Especially places like Jankara, which is has a free soft drink bar <3
Once you split it all up, it ends up being about 200-300 yen an hour per person.
There's more expensive ones to (like with boozahol, or themed places), and it's always a little more expensive after six p.m.
Mmm...Karaoke <3 <3 <3 (Diana goes two or three times a week, optimally)
I wouldn't be surprised if Canada had more Asian style karaoke. Comparatively speaking, the asian population is larger and more influential (Why there are a large percentage of Canadians in the anime industry XD) <3 Go Canada! Set a trend <3
In other news, you watching Dora in Japanese makes me convulse. XD
I! WANNA! KARAOKE!
Ummm. My story. OOOH COATS. I'm trying to turn into you with the roughly 12 million coats. Since I got back, I found this ADORABLE black trenchcoat that is ultra super-seekrit spy, right up 'til the point where it flares out and ends in a knee-length ruffle. :3 And then while I was lost in Ballard yesterday I found this vintage heavy winter coat that comes down to my shins and has fur and brocade and is roughly half-way between Small and Orange and Nikita Red, and badly needs ... well, not Meiji boots, but, like, Russian Enlightenment boots.
WHEN YOU COME BACK CAN WE GO SHOPPING?! IT IS ONLY LIKE 26% AS MUCH FUN WITHOUT YOU. ):
YES WE'LL GO SHOPPING LET'S DO THAT. Shopping with you is super fun since we have similar disfunction (i.e GGGGGYYYUHUHUHUHCOOOOOATS!)
26% is an oddly specific number. So wait, do you live in Washington permanently? I'm confused.
Russian enlightenment boots! I was about to go get a pair of those. Small and bunchy boots died, so I have to get new ones. One of the one's I'm contemplating I've named 'Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Boots' and the other is 'MOSKAU MOSKAU!'
If you magically come to japan I will take you to karaoke.
There is a complex formula that leads me to arrive at 26%. It ... involves, like ... algebra. Heh-heh. Algae-bra.
Yeah.
Did you figure out the Warshington thing? I am not looking at timestamps, here, but yeh, my year in exile is OVER AHAHAHAHAHA and I am BACK HAHAHAHAHA and starting at the Seattle Culinary Academy the week after next HAHAHAHAHA!
Dood!!! Sweet! I did not know about that last part there (How would I have known about that?) THAT'S REALLY AWESOME. You should cook for me 0______0!!!!!
I mean...wait...
