I would say that the decision to change came from God as a supernatural event. That is, that God "touched my heart" and thus changed it from one willing only to change for the worse (or, towards selfish interest) to one striving to change for the better (or, towards self sacrifice).
This "doctrine" of change is pretty fundamental in the bible, and also a terrific guard against the hubris, pride, and selfishness that so easily arises when brought to an encounter with "empowerment" as you put it. The power comes not from who I am or was or will be, but only through the God in whom my belief is placed (when even the placement is a thing entirely of His doing, and not my own).
And about the non-profits, I didn't think about how their employees might be hired on different terms than most. I will be checking that out! I think most will come out in the interview anyway - I would say that is where employers ask themselves "what kind of person is this?"
