So when the results come in and the Democrats begin to crow, remember this: By historical standards, this is the American people's usual response to entrenched power -- a bracing and chastening contempt. Sixth-year presidents nearly always bring their parties down. (Republican overreaching on the Monica Lewinsky scandal made Bill Clinton's sixth year an exception.) after posting the above, I went to read today's paper and there was a column by Paul Greenberg. Seems Lincoln's party lost 22 seats in the House (Greenberg doesn't mention the Senate), due to voters' reaction to the Civil War and Harry Truman's party, in 1950, lost 5 Senate seats and 28 in the House. Guess Krauthammer said Clinton's 6th year was an exception to these regular happenings, but it occurs to me that the Dems lost some in 1994, so maybe the voter reaction just happened earlier in his admin, I don't know. Anyway, bodes well for the change you hope for (unless it rains or snows, and Dems, being told they're gonna win anyway, stay home from the polls. This always boils down to which part of the population bothers to vote.
