Title: Insults
Character(s): Kusagi Ryukaro of Guardian's Wings
Notes: OC drabble for my original fic, Guardian's Wings. Features lovable jock, Kusagi Ryukaro!!! This drabble and the following are all related to this theme.
Words: 100
There was a time when Ryukaro hated his green eyes, so strange, so different from all the others’ eyes. Too bright to be blue, too dark to be hazel. A recipe for trouble.
He remembered the insults they flung to his face: "green boy", "alien", "freak of nature." The way their lips would curve up at the corners in a smirk, and how they would bring their fingers to point triumphantly at the offender. Their sadistic pleasure in watching him squirm and try to weasel out of their attention. They were jackasses and ignorant fools, every last one of them.
Title: Reflection
Character(s): Ryukaro
Words: 79
In the mornings when Ryukaro washed and rinsed his face, he would take the time to look at the mirror and study the eyes reflected there. He saw the flecks of yellow and brown in them, all swirling together with the green to make a color neither normal nor beautiful. Sometimes, on especially cranky and irritated days, the boy splashed water on the water and stomped out of the bathroom to face a new school day where nobody understood.
Title: Friend
Character(s): Kusagi Ryukaro and Hachimaru Tsuichi (here comes the uke protagonist!!)
Notes: Boys' friendship
Words: 72
Hachimaru Tsuichi was his first real friend. All the others were only interested in the free meals at his home and got on his nerves. Tsuichi was small; an academic prodigy and an easy target for the same boys and girls who made fun of his green eyes. Maybe that was the reason why he protected the blond - a way to fight back his tormentors who had haunted him for so long.
Title: Relevation
Character(s): Ryukaro and Tsuichi
Notes: Implied yaoi if you squint REALLY closely.
Words: 113
"Do you know, Kusagi-kun," Tsuichi asked one day after losing his pursuers at the intersection, lungs gasping for breath. Ryukaro held the boy’s elbow to steady him.
"What?" He listened to his friend’s ragged breathing, still clutching tightly to him.
"They’re wrong."
Ryukaro wasn’t an intuitive person. He had always been too busy protecting himself from their words to really care how others felt. But there was his heart slowing in its cage, and he clenched his teeth. "What do you mean?"
A soft smile crept upon Tsuichi’s face. "What do they know about the color of your eyes? I think the color looks kind of like emerald. They’re not strange at all, just rare."
Title: Realization
Character(s): Ryukaro, bit of Kai
Words: 64
The next morning when he slipped into the bathroom, Ryukaro stared at his reflection.
Instead of seeing "alien" or "freak," he saw that his eyes really did have the shade of emerald, after all. He peered at their depths, until Kai’s knocking on the door sent him washing his face and brushing his teeth.
Ryukaro found he didn’t hate his eyes as much anymore.
