An amazing manga that's gripping and beautiful is Sakuranbo Syndrome (aka Cupid no Itazura II). As disclaimer, there are revealing sex scenes, but the plot, characters, and depiction of emotion is the best I have ever read in manga.
In fact, all three major works by that author I highly recommend: Cupid no Itazura (finished) and Kono S wo Miyo! (Ongoing, 5 volumes).
Shoujo-tastic, but not gripping: Sing Yesterday For Me (7 volumes, ongoing).
3 Gatsu no Lion, ongoing, by the author of Honey and Clover.
Only recent J-Dorma that I would recommend is Ryusei no Kizuna; it was above average, which is more than I can say for most shows I've sampled.

My brother told me about Gatsu no Lion. I have a deep and abiding love for Honey and Clover, so this is just one more reason I need to check it out.
Thanks for the recs! I'll have to tell you if I get into any of these.
