Rating: PG
Pairing: Onew/Key
Wordcount: 2,523
Summary: Onew always thought Kibum and he had a unique meeting.
“One vanilla ice cream,” Onew calls, hopping on the white snow and breathing on his numb fingers, and a boy eyes him from his left.
Onew tries not to stare too much because it’s plain weird, but it doesn’t stop the fact that the person beside him was the one staring too much.
The ice-cream granny hands him his cone, he pays for it- and get his usual change, he turns to his left to leave but the tip of the vanilla treat get smeared on the person’s cheek.
He looks up to meet Onew’s eyes, and Onew blushes. He’s not one that pays attention to relationships, he trusts books, mystery fiction and adventure series, but this boy takes his breath away and it’s suddenly not up to Onew to decide what he wants to do.
“What are you looking at?” He asks, and then Onew blurts out a line from a romance novel he didn’t think he would have said in reality.
“To see if you have your name printed on your face, but I guess not.”
“I’m Key.” He says; a smile as he attempts to wipe the vanilla ice cream from the corner of his lips using his sleeves, and Onew leans in to lick it away.
“I’m Onew. And,” He points at Key’s lips. “That’s my ice cream, by the way.”
Key looks at the boy in front of him and what he had just did, he should have yelled ‘pervert’ and get home as fast as he could, but this is Key, he is Key, so he nods.
“I like you.” Onew says, looking into Key’s eyes.
Key grins like a child, then Onew grabs his hands, flinching at how cold it is, and brings it up his mouth, blowing warm air all over it, his cheeks flushed and his hair messy from winter wind; and Key feels warmer, not only his hand does, but his cheeks does, and so does his heart-even for a moment, it felt as if it have something to beat for, so he lets Onew drag him away, from the ice-cream truck, from the icy snow around his snow boots, from the icy air around his body and away from the mask he calls ‘Key’.
“I’m Kibum, Kim Kibum,” He yells to Onew, running and panting in front of him, and Onew trips over a rock, pulling them together down, smiling and laughing; limbs tangled and snow all over themselves, and Onew grins suddenly.
“I’m Lee Jinki.” He says, and Kibum feels a rush of affection in his heart because he wasn’t the only one dropping the fake mask.
It feels almost relieving.
---
Jinki screams, looking down, hundreds of meters away from someplace called the amusement park, and finds it amusing how you could be amused when you’re screaming on the top of the rollercoaster.
He turns to his side, Kibum’s waving his arms about, smiling to the sky and yells something about how beautiful the sunset is, and Jinki dreams about being the skies and the sun so Key would look at him for quite awhile.
“Don’t compliment the skies and the sun,” Jinki breathes, gasping after a turn.
“Why? If it’s pretty, it deserves my compliment.”
“Because you’re more beautiful than the sky, more breathtaking than the sun.”
Kibum turns rather red (it’s hard to see- but the purple and orange of sunset rays do make him look gorgeous though) and Jinki flashes a victorious grin towards the sky because it was never going to make him blush like that.
Their fingers interlock, and Jinki abruptly lets his mind wonder how long would this happiness last because it shouldn’t.
“Jinki; if you don’t break up with that boyfriend of yours I won’t own you as my son.”
“But why? I love him, you know that. Just because I fell for a guy? Is that what you’re saying?”
“No. You are in an arranged marriage with Luna; didn’t I already tell you?”
“Why? I don’t care if her father is your good buddy or whatever shit, but I won’t do it.”
“The more you reject, the sooner it would come, Jinki, don’t be stubborn.”
“Earth to Jinki~” Kibum whispers in Jinki’s ears, and then he snaps out of his trance.
“Sorry.”
“Have a bite,” Kibum pushes the mountain of cotton candy to his lips. “What were you thinking about?”
“Nothing. Nothing important-” He pauses to chew at the pink candy. “Oh look! It’s Taemin.”
“You know him? He’s from my dance class.”
“He’s my cousin.” Jinki laughs and approaches Taemin, Kibum’s arm in his, and Jinki flinches at the thought of having Luna’s arms around his.
“Taemin-goon~” Kibum coos behind Taemin, and his beanie flies out of his hair a little as he turns around.
“Oh god- please don’t pop out like that anymore, Key hyung.”
He pats his chest, and then he lets out a gasp, his puffy cheeks turning crimson fast, so Kibum and Jinki turns to look at whoever made him that way.
Kibum giggles, and Jinki gave Taemin a sly side-glance, and they move away after Kibum whispers something in Taemin’s ear.
Taemin pouts, Jinki doesn’t figure it out on time (like he always does) but Kibum laughs and they smile at their school junior before leaving.
I would do anything to make this last, Jinki says to himself, feeling the steady heartbeat of Kibum beside his arm, sighing as his father’s words resounded in his head; crystal clear, but a little muffled by Kibum’s laughter, the sound of Kibum’s footsteps, the sounds of Kibum’s jagged breathing and their identical pulses.
Happiness isn’t coming too easy for Jinki, he stares at the note on the refrigerator when he got home, and he realizes how determined he is to break free.
“Tomorrow 2PM- Lunch meeting with Jaeseon and Luna. --- Dad”
---
“Have a seat.” Luna’s father addresses, and all of them sit down, much like the feeling of nerves in his guts settling down.
“You know each other, right?”
Jinki nods, so does Luna. They don’t talk, not even exchanging greetings; Jinki’s worrying about Kibum and Luna was plain dazed.
Jinki moves his chair nearer to Luna, and he whispers something he didn’t think he would.
“I can’t marry you, Luna-sshi.”
“I can’t be married to you either.”
“Really?”
“I have someone I love. Is it good or bad oppa?”
“Good. I have someone, too.”
“Is it Key?”
“H-how did you know?”
“Well… Your father sent a car to pick me up and said I was the future Mrs. Lee, so… Key-oppa was there; he heard, got mad at random people and yelled at the chauffeur. I’m sorry.”
“Oh…”
Jinki smiles as a form of encouragement for Luna, but his heart knows more than he should tell her.
His father wasn’t going to let this go; he knows, but his mind keeps telling him he should free Luna because she has a reason to live; and he should free himself too, because he has Kibum; and Kibum has him.
Jinki’s phone vibrates in his pocket, and he pulls it out swiftly, and his heart skips a beat when he sees it’s Kibum on the line.
“He-hello?”
“I need to talk to you, Jinki.”
“Um, okay, where are you now?”
“By the beach, come quickly won’t you?”
“Okay.”
Jinki punches the table rather loudly and yell in pain, clutching his stomach and running out from the room, Luna explaining about his stomachache and Jinki silently thanks her.
-
“Kibum!”
Jinki runs, runs, runs towards Kibum, there’s nothing he wants to do more than hugging Kibum right now, his Kibum who looks so pale and cold right now.
Kibum watches as Jinki jumps over rocks and avoid tree roots, as he feels utterly betrayed by Lee Jinki; he wasn’t feeling anything happy right now and pictures of Luna and Onew keeps forming in his mind.
Jinki rushes forward to wrap his arms awkwardly around the freezing Kibum but he pushes Jinki away; there wasn’t a drop of sympathy in his eyes; like the first time they met. Cold, freezing and beautifully inhumane.
“Kibum- what are you-”
“I can’t believe you’re dating Luna while telling me you love me- me, Onew Lee Jinki. Before I met you, I get what I want in my life every single time, and you’re the first person that made me feel like I need something different; something I have to cherish before I rid of it in my life, and now you’re taking all of the happiness I felt and giving it to Luna when I don’t even want to throw you away, Jinki- Do you think it’s fair?”
Onew stares in disbelief, he tries saying something to defend himself but all he could do was to shake his head. Key called his full name. That couldn’t mean anything good. Key’s fists clenched tight, he plops down on the beach bench right beside, a tear making its way down Key’s perfect cheek.
“Please, Kibum, please, don’t cry…”
Onew moves, his hand moves to wipe that drop of emotion away, he wants to sweep all of Key’s unhappiness away-but he remembers he was the one who caused it, and Key slaps his hand away.
“I’m not dating Luna.” Jinki mutters through his chapped lips, but Kibum hears it and who could he lie to? It’s hard to believe, after the rumors spread like fire on dry leaves at school.
Onew looks at the sandy ground, their pathetic state, but before he could say anymore, Key cries loudly, neither trying to do anything.
Key walks away with a trail of footprints on the sand, then the waves wash them away; Onew left his name on the sand using a tree branch- and hope the harsh waters don’t forget him like how Key did, like something irreversible, he wants Kibum to remember him. Remember, and not cry because it hurt.
-
“Onew-hyung, you have a meeting in Seoul today evening.”
“Oh. Uh, thank you Taemin-sshi- and by the way… Do you have any news about Kibum?”
“Kibum- oh, Key-hyung? Sorry, but no.”
“Okay then.”
Jinki pulls out the Polaroid photo Kibum took at school one day, fondly touching the surface, tears spilling silently on the plane.
-
“Is there anywhere you want to go to, Onew-hyung? I know of a famous cafeteria, restaurants and oh- there’s really delicious ice cream in Seoul.”
Taemin’s rants continue for quite some time, and Jinki’s thoughts float back to the time when he met Kibum, his Kibum by the roadside ice cream shop, his heart numbing like frostbite.
“Yes- the ice cream shop beside the bookstore around here?” He interrupts Taemin; a blank look replacing the younger’s features.
“Oh, sure. Let me get the car.”
-
“One vanilla cone, please.”
Jinki looks at the man in the stand, no longer the old granny with deep dimples and squinting eyes.
“What about you?”
The tall man- no, boy, looked at Taemin and just for a little while, Jinki saw the young boy blush. Well, something to make fun of him when they get back to Paris.
“Chocolate.” Taemin mumbles, and then looks down at the snow.
Jinki thinks of himself in the past, then pats Taemin’s back reassuringly.
Because it’s going to be all okay, he thinks, but Kibum wasn’t around-
“Jjongie wait, I want to get some ice cream.”
“Get me a chocolate one, won’t you?”
“I just don’t get why you don’t like vanilla, Jonghyun.”
“Oh whatever, hurry. We’ve got a meeting with Mr. Lee soon.”
Onew drops his cone on the cold floor, watching Key, Key, his Key walking to him, and the ice-cream boy’s lingering touches on his secretary’s hands when he passed him the ice cream.
“Key- Kibum-”
“Jinki.”
Just a whisper, but it brings back memories in form of tears down Jinki’s face.
“Oh gosh, what a coincidence to meet you here, Mr. Lee! I’m Kim Jonghyun, remember? This is my business partner, Kim Key- oh, you know each other?”
Kibum lets out a long breath, Jinki see tears around his eyes and hesitates to wipe it all away.
“Key-“
“Jinki. Could you- explain what happened between you, Luna, your father, her father and me?”
“I’m sorry, really, Kibum, really, I didn’t marry Luna in the end!”
Jonghyun backs off softly, chatting with Taemin and the ice-cream boy, Minho.
“I was in an arranged marriage with Luna-sshi because her family was rich. She had someone she loved, so did I,” he paused to glance at Kibum blushing, “so we ran away at the night of the engagement, she meeting her love and I running to my friend’s.”
Jinki looks at Kibum earnestly, grief flowing down from their eyes hotly.
“I never want, wanted or will want to lose you, Kibum, no matter whatever you think of me now, please do not think that I abandoned you because I never did and never planned to in the past.”
Jinki wipes his tears on his sleeve, Kibum watching, crying; the whole scene seems so unrealistic.
“After these years, I don’t know if you’ve forgotten me, or think that I am a useless jerk because I left you crying but Kibum- now that you’re here, please listen to what I have to say- please believe that I still love you, please promise that you will believe.”
“I believe, Jinki, after these times, I do. I come back here weekly, I watched as granny’s health get worse, I taught Minho how to scoop a cone of ice cream properly, I made Jonghyun love the ice cream here, all these while thinking about you and only you, and now you ask whether I believe in you or not.”
“Kibum.”
Jinki wraps his orange scarf around Key’s thin neck, and then gently kisses his jaw. Key missed this feeling, it was locked away in his heart for awhile now, but he finds it now, and he can’t afford lose it again. He pulls Onew to himself, burying his head into Onew’s chest, breathing in the scent he’s been looking for in everywhere; yes, he’s not going to lose it, ever again, even if it meant messing his perfect hair up, or spilling ice cream over his boots.
“I miss you, Kibum, I miss you- I really do.”
Kibum says nothing, he just keeps crying on Jinki’s shoulder because his tears convey everything more than he can say; so he keeps crying until Jinki plants his lips against his, and he momentarily forgets how to breathe, and he blushes, just like when they first met.
Jinki laughs between his breath, and Taemin comes bustling to him.
“Mr. Lee! Oh no, it’s time! You have to meet Mr. Kim-“
“It’s me, Taemin-ah.” Jonghyun points to himself, whipping his fringe to a side.
“Oh. Oh. Okay then, do you have to get a venue or something? Or we could discuss everything here-“
“I think we’re done,” Jinki concludes, smiling. “It’s a deal, of course.”
“What a unique decision…” Taemin mutters, Kibum and Jinki feels a pang of familiarity hit their heart.
That’s right, they were meant to be unique together.
