Summary: when the radio cooperates with you
Over and over.
It was not making sense and Jessica was a picture of frustration as she hung her head over her pile of readings for Civil Procedure tomorrow. Certiorari… procedure for appeals… motion for reconsideration… she was supposed to get all of the concepts by tomorrow. But it was all too confusing and too much. She tried her hardest for this class, but it never was enough. A girl can only give so much.
Jessica blinked back tears as she went to the beginning of the chapter again.
"Hey." A hand on her shoulder.
She looked up to see Tiffany frowning at her. "Come on. Coffee break."
"Tiff, I --" the tears were threatening to spill out.
"I know, shh, I know, I know." Tiffany helped up the tired girl to her feet, and gathered her into an embrace. "You just need a minute."
Jessica bowed her head. At that moment, a familiar overture came through the radio on her desk. "Love this song," Tiffany whispered.
She pulled aside Jessica's sweater and rested her lips on her bare shoulder. Slowly, she traced a path to the base of her neck, breathing in her scent as she did so, a faint vanilla lingering. Jessica slid her hands over Tiffany's lower back and gently pressed Tiffany against her. Jessica closed her eyes.
Grace
She takes the blame
She covers the shame
Removes the stain
It could be her name
They remained like that for a while, slightly swaying to the music.
It was times like these, Tiffany thought, that she secretly described God-like. When her soul kind of felt bigger than her body; when Jessica overwhelms with just being there. It's when the things she wanted to tell Jessica build up inside her, that she could not contain them; but all they are remained at the tip of her tongue, never letting her formulate them into words.
And with all the things she couldn't say, Tiffany just held Jessica the best way she could.
Grace
It's a name for a girl
It's also a thought that changed the world
And when she walks on the street
You can hear the strings
Grace finds goodness in everything
It's on the third stanza that their foreheads found each other, their arms draped around each other's waists. Tiffany's eyes were still closed, but Jessica was taking in the infinite smoothness of the other girl's skin, the delicacy of her her eyelashes, the contrast of a stray lock of black hair against the whiteness of her cheek. The proximity of Tiffany's face to hers is something she still has to get used to.
Jessica gently brought the back of her hand to Tiffany's cheek. She ran the backs of her fingers against her cheekbone. She didn't speak, and Tiffany opened her eyes and stared into the warm brown pools that are Jessica's. It reminded her of that song, what was it, oh, And I'm drowning in your --
There, they kissed briefly, with half-lidded eyes. As they broke the kiss, Jessica added a soft peck, like a signature.
Tiffany smiled. Not her usual trademark smile that she uses to dazzle -- just a little one, but her eyes were shining and Jessica's breath hitched all the same.
What once was hurt
What once was friction
What left a mark
No longer stings
Because grace makes beauty
Out of ugly things
The DJ's voice intruded into the scene, "And that was Grace by U2 from their album All That You Can't..." Tiffany reached up and flicked Jessica's nose. "Let's go, loser."
Jessica made a face, making Tiffany laugh, and the two girls broke their embrace. With a sweep, Jessica caused her books to fall into a backpack and swung it unto her shoulder.
Arm in arm, they went out into the street, where a light snow was beginning to fall.
