Author Spotlight January 2012

As always, please remember to check out our twitter feed @shinierthanthou for a fresh mix of old and new fic recs provided throughout the week!

In the first of our author spotlights for this month, we'll be focusing on: estimae.

They say the devil is in the details, and estimae's thorough construction of both believable setting and character is evidence of such careful craft. One of the most difficult elements to capture in writing fic is legitimacy, especially when it comes to AUs-- maintaining a recognizable character without resorting to charicature is a fine line to walk. estimae manages this beautifully, fleshing out figures with minute observations (a moment that really floated my boat in "straight through the heart of me" is when Minho appraises rocker!Onew's image and pictures Onew burning a finger on his iron, a little look behind the scenes cleverly through Minho's own eyes) and vivid descriptive passages that steer clear of florid sentimentality. It's neat, it's clean, it's sexy as hell. Not to mention the constructed universes are intriguing in and of themselves, whether mythical in basis or as familiar as the local gym.

A highlight from straight through the heart of me, rocker!Onew/footie star!Minho au:

Finally Minho thought, fuck it, and held tight onto Onew's shoulders as he squeezed them between the thrashing crowd. He laughed and shouted "Hey there, jock," his tone pitched with the right amount of suggestion, and Minho was pleasantly relieved when Onew melted into his arms in a move that wasn't his friendly flirting at the bar. The music excited Onew, and Minho told himself it had something to do with the bass sticking their skin together.

Swell prose in sunday punch, Minho/Jonghyun boxing au:

Jonghyun's smiles he reserved for better days, like today. The halls were sparsely lit when less people were getting in their hours, and with the swaying light on him, Jonghyun reminded Minho of the grainy boxing prints inside the head office, raw victory in black and white.

wax and anchor, an intense icarus Minho/Onew au:

The moon anchored itself onto Jinki's back, casting shadows on the welts across his spine and ribs and intersecting across each other like a map, maybe their map home, maybe one that would lead Jinki back to him. Minho couldn't read it anymore, either way.
