Focusing, Taemin raised his bow, playing the first phrase brilliantly. His long fingers switched between positions with ease and the notes that flew out of his instrument were clear as light.

It's common knowledge that Choi Minho isn't a man made for boundaries.

Being in the principal's office for deciding to call his teacher a prostitute is more than enough proof. Minutes after, Minho is being released with the consequence of having to attend a class that will separate him from being around Kim Kibum and his eminent group of friends. The transition is by and largely painless since Minho sees Kibum practically every day. Change isn't so bad.

Almost seven years ago, while doing rounds somewhere in Seoul, they'd talked about how -- when this was all finished -- they'd head to a place with trees. Living, breathing trees with branches ten times the length of their bodies, and trunks as thick and tall as buildings, and roots that burrowed nearly to the core of the Earth herself. And the sea right by, with waves frothing against the stones and shoreline with its white sand, and all kinds of fish, and weeds, and life. At the end of their rounds, they'd concluded they were boneheaded dreamers, brought up to be war-mongers.

Jonghyun removes the paper from the wood and presses the earring into his palm, the point of it poking into his skin, and looks out toward the ocean, where the sun is lighting it just the lightest shade of coral. He thinks he knows why Key didn’t swim back out to sea the night the hurricane swept him in.

To Jonghyun, he’s the weakest link of the group. He’s too short, too plain, not thin enough. He’s not as good a dancer as Taemin, not as gorgeous as Minho, not as good a singer as Onew, not as good a rapper as Key. He cries way too easily and he gets hurt way too much, like when he pulled his ligament and had to go for surgery. So he tries to overcompensate and works out till his body almost breaks and sings till his voice does, but it never feels like enough.

Jinki laughs and they fall quiet again. People flit past, battling rumors of a no show and curtly informing doubters that they were just running late, the Rolling Stones were never a no show. A small fight breaks out to their left. It ends when one man breaks his beer bottle over the other’s shoulder. Taemin rushes over instantly, pulling off his t-shirt and offering it as a dressing. There is a delicate repulsion on his face as he watches the blood seep into his disowned garment before he is back at Jinki’s side.
