The idea of the two of them together wasn't something that was generally accepted. The two of them didn't show off too much of a 'relationship aura'; the thought that they might be together was something that could be pondered for a grand total of five seconds, before the human's mind jumped to more probable and more noteworthy things to think about.

Hatake Kakashi was an elite Jounin-he was always late for his meetings with his Team, and he never really had time to talk to Umino Iruka, a simple, warm-hearted Chuunin teacher.

He could never answer the question-so, how did you know that you love him?

He knew it wasn't when he saw the young Iruka, crying pathetically in front of the secluded part of the village, the place where the fallen heroes lie. He was on his way to scold Obito for being late again, and he never even gave the young teen a second glance.

He knew it wasn't when the teacher, someone below his rank, opposed to his idea of plunging his students into the Chuunin Exam. He thought it was preposterous and stupid for somebody like Iruka to contradict his ideas, because after all, he was once a student of the Fourth-

He knew it wasn't when the kind-hearted teacher gave him a bouquet of flowers, with a little card that said that he should get well soon, and guide his students (they are soldiers, soldiers, not just students) once more.

He tried thinking, but he couldn't pinpoint the exact time when his feelings of indifference and unconcern melted and morphed into something so strong, something that commanded his will to protect the other, and coaxed his heart to stop mourning and grieving for his losses years back.

Iruka taught him to love again.

Now, he found the person who'd accept him, who understood why he was always late, why never cried with his original eye, why he was the Kakashi now. And Iruka never asked him to go back to his original self-without the charade of wanting to copy-

Iruka taught him to live again.

I've lost everybody, everything, every single thing dear to me-except one. I won't let you go, no matter what.
