Well..."doppleganger" is an Americanism of "doppelganger."
Literally, doppelganger means "double-walker."
We could be Websterish (well, google-websterish, anyway) and say that it is "a spiritual or ghostly double or counterpart; an apparitional double of a living person," but I think "shadow-self" will work for a definition. ;)
