I tried looking it up, but the only books the library will afford me lately are about weather. I wonder if it means anything.

Of course it doesn't.

Silly, really.

[ the hint of a sigh, but it's short enough to be missed ]

It's not that important, but I was wondering: who is Valentine, and why do they have an entire day in their honor ( Read more... )

I am and I treat the occasion as a birthday.

[ LONG PAUSE... ]

Treat, which would ....suggest that it isn't actually your birthday then.

Correct. People assumed my having the same name as the holiday warranted special attention, so I did just that.

They're a Saint from Earth. Which means they were killed rather nastily and this apparently proves that they're holy in some manner. In fact, they might not have even been real, which wouldn't surprise me, but I can't find it in myself to care.

That doesn't really matter, though, as the point is focusing extravagantly on couples and giving out lots of cards and chocolates. The shops have a field day.

A day focused on people who love each other in the honor of other people who were killed---except that they might not have been due to the possibility that they...weren't real to begin with?

[ Eye roll is pretty evident in his tone. Mostly at the Master. ]

While the martyrs of several saints by the name of Valentine is a great deal... Different countries tend to celebrate it differently. Take Japan from Earth, for instance. Usually February Fourteenth is for girls to either buy chocolates or make them for those of the male gender. A month later, on March Fourteenth, the boys get their turn.

Like I said. The point is chocolate and couples.

That's what it is now, not what it is intended to be.

Valentine was a guy who did some great stuff and got a silly holiday named after him. Before he ruined it, Balentine was an awesome holiday, fully of people throwing off their marriage vows and just having a lot of fun.

As with everything else, the Church ruined the fun for everybody.

Why would dispensing with vows be fun?

Because being allowed to break the rules is always fun.

Oh...well, actually I would hope that if I made any sort of vow or...promise with another...with...someone, that it would be kept.

We have a lot of time to see many things. But that doesn't mean we see everything.

Hardly.

That would be ridiculous.

Not even a holiday celebrated throughout various countries? Besides Britain, I'm nearly certain that America celebrates it too.

I- I for one, purchased a lace heart for Victoria one Valentine's day.
