“Ne, Keito~” The tallest among seven poked the English boy’s cheeks.
“Mmmhh..?? Yuto…stop poking me…I need…to rest…” Keito groaned brows furrowed.
“But you need to get dressed~ We’re going to Yoyogi… volleyball support…don’t you remember?”
Keito opened his eyes and glared at Yuto. He threw his pillow on his best friend’s face. “You’re so not allowed to sit beside me later! Go find someone else to disturb! I haven’t slept yet!” he literally kicked Yuto out of his room. He really wanted to go back to sleep but work calls for him already. For heaven’s sake he’s only 17 yet he have to experience this? Nevertheless he forced himself to take a bath and be ready for their trip.
Oh how he hated this day. Going to Yoyogi. He isn’t as cheerful as the others. Yuto clutched onto Yamada as they went onto the vehicle which will take them to the venue.
“Yuto! Stop clutching onto my shirt!” Yamada shouted and Yuto felt really dejected. He bit his lip and looked like ready to cry.
“Daijoubu Yuto-kun… you can always sit beside me.” Chinen smiled at him cheering Yuto up.
The trip for Keito is too long. This is what he hated most. He can’t sleep during the trip. He’s still all grumpy when they arrived at the venue.
“Guys! You’re next. Good luck!” one of the staff said. “Where’s Okamoto-san?”
“He said he’ll just go get something.” Ryutaro informed them
Meanwhile Keito is on his way back, he saw someone by the corner, crying.
He doesn’t know why but his legs carried him towards the sobbing girl.
When he squatted down beside her, she looked at him. He gave his handkerchief and said “You shouldn’t be crying. Girls look more attractive when they smile.” He beamed her smile. She reached for the hanky and wiped her tears. When she was about to thank the kind guy, she noticed that he’s already gone.
Keito didn’t know why but his mood lightened up. “Maybe helping someone out made me feel better.” He thought as he stood behind Ryutaro who is now panicking.
“Waaah…where’s Keito? Our performance is next!”
“Ryutaro…I’m just behind you.” He chuckled
“Ow you scared me. Let’s do our best!” he smiled and then they were called on stage.
*************
After the performance, each member collapsed onto the couch.
“That’s tiring.” Yamada complained fanning himself.
“Yet fun~” Yuto added smiling.
“I hope they’ll win.” Chinen said changing into his favorite shirt.
“Of course they’ll win!” Ryutaro exclaimed. “We should always be positive. Ne, Keito?” When no Keito responded, he fluttered his eyes open and looked around. He scratched his not-so-itchy head wondering where his lovely friend had gone this time.
Chinen seeing his friend’s worried expression sat beside him and shoved water onto his hands. “Don’t worry… he’ll be back soon.”
Ryutaro nodded. “Thanks Chii.”
***************
Keito wandered around the stadium in search for the girl from earlier. He was in the middle of watching a match when someone tugged his sleeves.
“Anno…” she started. She’s blushing. “Arigatou for earlier. Here’s your handkerchief.”
“Oh it was nothing. And the handkerchief, you can take it.” He smiled.
“Why were you crying earlier?” he asked as he lead her inside where they can sit and
Talk. Somehow, Keito felt comfortable with her same as the other.
“Uhmm… my hands are kinda slippery today so I broke some plates and glasses I was holding. Manager-san scolded me so badly. He was really scary. Good thing he didn’t fire me.” The girl narrated fidgeting.
Keito suddenly stretched her cheeks using both hands.
“Ouch! What was that for?” she complained rubbing her hurt cheeks.
“Nothing. I just thought that you’re cuter when I stretch your cheeks. What’s your name again?”
“Ah… Miki…” she answered still rubbing her cheeks. She doesn’t know now if her cheeks are warm because he pinched her or because of the compliment.
“Miki… nice name. It suits you. I’m Keito.”
Since then, Keito always looked forward to visiting Yoyogi for volleyball support. Each time, he and Miki will spend time together telling random stories about their lives and what had happened to them for the whole year they wasn’t able to communicate.
7 started to wonder why Keito had this sudden change of behavior. When Yuto wakes him up to dress up, he won’t glare at him anymore. Instead he would thank him and give him something nice. He would also let him sit beside him during the trip and he can already sleep during the ride. He even performed well. 7 were really happy but then they got curious.
**************
“So how have you been?” Keito tried his rarely used English.
“I’m good!” Miki reported happily. “A lot happened. Ups and downs…you know…typical way of living.” She blushed with the way Keito is looking at her. “H-how about you? How have you been?” she asked to snap him out of his reverie.
“Oh! Me? Haha…uhmmm. Life challenged me a lot this year. Things happened really fast that I haven’t noticed that I’m close to graduating senior high.”
“Uh…so…” Miki found it really hard to find a topic for them. Keito is unexpectedly quiet today.
“Let’s go out Miki!” he suddenly exclaimed.
“Waaah….Y-you m-mean like a…like a date?” Miki felt herself blush some more as the last word escaped from her mouth.
The young English boy nodded.
“Me and Keito? Dating?” she kept on thinking. She can’t decide but Keito has already pulled her out and is dragging her to the arena’s exit. Before she knew it, they were already sitting on a table inside a high-class café.
“Miki?” he waved his hand in front of her eyes.
“Keito?” she whispered still not in her normal self. She’s still on the state of processing the boy’s words earlier.
Snapping out of it, she yelled. “Do you want me to get fired?”
“Of course not. Why would I?” he tilted his head oh-so-cutely that the young lady forgot why she is mad at him in the first place.
“Manager-san will get mad at me again.” She muttered anxiously.
“He said it’s okay. He even told us to enjoy.” Keito took a bite of his garlic bread. “Delicious!” he remarked.
“Huh?”
“Just relax, Miki. I borrowed you for a day.”
“You what?!”
“Seriously, have you forgotten to clean your ears today? You seem to be a little deaf.” He teased earning a whack on his head.
“I’m serious!” Miki said.
“So am I! Do I look like a clown pulling off a crazy joke?”
Miki leaned back and sighed. She looked down. Her mind is really clouded.
She felt Keito’s breath near her hearing organ. “Happy Birthday Miki.” He whispered then he kissed her cheek.
“T-thank you.” She stuttered. Since when did she start stuttering too much? She and Keito have been really close since the day they first met to the point that it looked like that they were together; to the point that she lets Keito kiss her.
“Hey. Don’t you want to eat? What’s wrong Miki?”
“Ah! Don’t mind me. It’s…it’s just that you’re the first person to greet me on my birthday.” She stated.
“Well then let me feed you!” he cheered waving the spoon of cake in front of her cooing her to open her mouth.
“Keito! I can feed myself!”
“Oh no. Today, you’ll be treated like a princess. For today, I’ll be your prince.” Though I wish it would be forever. He smiled
“O-okay.” Miki slowly opened her mouth and ate the cake. Its sweetness savored on her tongue and she loved it. “It’s delicious!”
“I told you.” He plopped the cake icing on his mouth.
“Keito…ahmmm… you…” she said pointing at the corner of Keito’s mouth. He tried wiping the icing but failed so Miki went beside him and wiped it with a tissue.
Their eyes locked for a moment. No one batted an eyelid but then Miki felt shy so she went back her chair. When they finished eating, Keito held out a hand on her.
“What?” she asked. “You’re my princess right? Then let me escort you out.”
They strolled outside and went to a nearby body of water. Keito made her seat on a rock and get something from behind the tree.
He sat in front of her and began strumming on the guitar and sang a romantic song. Miki knew it. From the very beginning, they both fell for each other. They knew that they were connected in a way; that they were destined to be together but not formally since Keito is not allowed to be in a relationship yet. Miki is satisfied with what relationship they have. They don’t need formalities as boyfriend-girlfriend. Being like this is more than enough.
In the end they both went to the temple to pray. Both fell silent in prayer. Both wished for each of them to be safe for another year will pass that they won’t be together.
“Keito, thank you for today. I’m so happy.” Miki said intertwining their fingers. Keito looked at their hands and silently wished that they would stay like that longer.
“You too made me happy, Miki. You take care okay?”
“Yes I will. See you again Keito.” She whispered as she entangled herself from the embrace and went home.
**************
Next year came. Keito excitedly went on the usual spot. Miki never showed up. Instead, her friend went there to give him a letter.
Keito,
I’m sorry I won’t able to come today. I went back to Malaysia, my hometown. I miss my parents already and I don’t know when I will be able to go back to Japan. Till then. Please wait for me. I know and I believe that one day we’ll see each other again. Please hold onto the vow we had. I’ll do too. I love you.
- Miki
That was the last message Keito had of her but then he kept going, holding onto their vow. He made Miki his inspiration in everything he did. Years past and he became successful. He never loses hope of seeing Miki again. He looked forward to it and never gave up.
***************
“And that was it.” Keito said proudly.
“What a nice story Okamoto-san.” The reporter remarked. “And I guess that’s how you and Miki-san started.”
“Keito!” a lovely lady called holding a child in her arms. She approached them and greeted the reporter.
“Hai. After all Keito held on the vow we made that time. Destiny pulled us together and the promise we made really proved our love.” Miki smiled as Keito gave her a kiss.
“Yes.”
“NO GOODBYES. Together till the end…”
