A seven year-old girl squatted playing with the sand. She finds it fun to mess up with her hands putting some water into the sand, shaping it to whatever would come to her mind. She is a very talented child especially in the field of arts. At the age of five, her works were recognized by the government and some of her works were displayed into the city’s museum. She was given the chance to choose to whichever school she wanted to study as a reward. Ever since she started schooling, she was enrolled to the most prestigious university on the land.
Satisfied, she stood up and smiled at her work. “Sugoii na, Kazumi-chan!” commented by one of those students around her. “Arigatou~!” was her reply. Even though Kazumi is famous and admired by many because of her great talent, she remained humble, sweet, and friendly. She never bragged about her achievements.
Just as she was walking back to wash her hands, a ball came flying on her head causing her to fall. “Ittai!” she howled in pain holding the spot where the ball landed. She turned to the place where the stupid ball went and swore that she’ll curse whoever threw the ball since her artwork is perfectly ruined. Her blood boiled and stood up to find the culprit but before she could do so, she heard somebody already yelling.
“Who threw this ball?” asked the boy same grade as her. On his left is a pail of water.
“Boku” one of those playing soccer said. “What’s your problem?” this guy looked so tough and fighting with him wouldn’t be a great idea since the boy from earlier is shorter than him.
The little boy threw the ball harshly to the other side. “Well, apparently, that stupid ball hit Kazumi-chan and it perfectly ruined her work.” He said in a relaxed way of saying it.
“So?”
“Apologize to her.” This statement shocked Kazumi a bit. She didn’t know this guy at all.
“Why would I? What can you do? You’re just a little brat quacking like a noisy duck.” He laughed.
“I’ll make you pay.” The little boy’s fist clenched.
“And how is that?” the other continued to laugh and pushed the little boy’s forehead using his index finger.
“Like this!” the little boy lifted the pail by his feet and poured its contents on the older boy’s head leaving the pail hanging on his head.
Knowing what’ll happen next, the little boy ran for dear life dragging Kazumi along with him by the wrist.
**********
Both panted as they entered an abandoned janitor’s room. Kazumi took deep breaths to make her breathing stable. The little boy’s hand is still linked with hers. She felt weird. “It’s not natural that your cheeks burn when you’re not sick right?” she thought and a realization dawned her. “Eh? I am sick? But I feel perfectly fine!” Kazumi exclaimed on her mind, panicking a bit.
“Ah… sumimasen!” the little boy broke the silence. His other hand is scratching his head and he looks so shy. “Aww… so kawaii!” Kazumi remarked still on her mind.
“T-thank you…for doing…that…” she thanked as she looked at him in the eyes. It glistened like crystals and it was undeniably captivating.
“Oh… that was nothing!” she noticed the other’s cheeks turned pink. “Eh? Is he sick too?” she thought.
“…and sorry for making your hands dirty too.” She continued. That’s when the boy realized the he’s still holding her hand. He immediately let go and got curious why he suddenly felt so shy.
“Uh…it’s okay.” He then beamed a smile. “Sorry too for dragging you here. I’m TakaKI Yuya by the way.” He introduced emphasizing ‘KI’ then extended his arms for a hand shake.
“My hands are still dirty.” She frowned not wanting to make the other kid’s hand dirtier than it already is.
Takaki took hers and gave it a shake. “Mine’s dirty too anyway. So I think it’s okay.” Both smiled.
“and I’m Ayukawa Kazumi. Yoroshiku TakaKi-kun.” Both laughed as she imitated his emphasizing of ‘KI’
“Let’s be good friends ne?” Takaki said.
“Of course.” Kazumi agreed holding out a pinkie and Takaki locked his in it.
“There. It’s official! We’re friends.”
Kazumi looked at her dark ceiling. She smiled as she remembered how they knew each other. It was like magic. The next thing she knew is that Takaki being on the same class as hers and them being close. The usual arguments can’t be help but they end up making up before the day ends. Kazumi has come to liking bullying Takaki since he’s a little bit smaller than him and too cute and chubby so she has the habit of pinching his cheeks till he wails and ask her to stop. They were completely inseparable. The young lady chuckled remembering the day that she confronted her friend for ignoring her for no particular reason.
It’s really weird when your closest friend begins to ignore you and make up excuses just to avoid you. That’s what Kazumi thought. She thought and thought and thought of a possible reason for Takaki to avoid her.
Bullying? Nah… She has stopped doing that since she-doesn’t-remember-when.
Offended him? Nope. She had tried to be at least a good girl since his birthday would be a few days from now. Definitely no.
For not coming over his house? Eh? He’s not that sensitive to avoid me for that reason she screamed in her thoughts.
She scratched her head glancing over the twelve-year-old Takaki Yuya diligently taking notes.
“I’ll definitely know what’s the matter, no matter what! He can’t run away this time!”
****
Young Takaki Yuya heaved a deep breath as the tardy bell rang signaling the end of classes. He thinks he’ll melt any moment since Kazumi won’t stop giving her death glares all throughout the day. He knows exactly why. He has been avoiding her since the science fair. The day the made things complicated between the two of them. He swore that he was awake when Kazumi did that. Just the thought of it made his heart go crazy. He slammed his eyes shut and silently prayed that his stupid heart would stop doing weird flips coz he swear he’ll go crazy if it won’t.
Oh yes. The science fair. He was very tired that day that he couldn’t move even a muscle. Kazumi’s on the roll that day. She bullied him to no extent until he cried. Yes he cried. He doesn’t know why but whenever Kazumi bullies him, he cries. He doesn’t know why it hurts like that while he can take whatever bullying 9 of his friends make to him. It’s quite a mystery. Back to that night, he collapsed onto their booth’s couch as he is tired of running around, avoiding evil Kazumi. He thought he’ll just grab some sleep and go home later but then after some time he sensed a person in front of him. He muttered something to send the person away but the person won’t budge. Annoyed, he shot up only to realize something soft on his lips. Then he doesn’t know what happened next but then, whenever he sees Kazumi, he began to panic like hell. He doesn’t like it one bit. Seriously.
So here he is, packing his things as humanly fast as possible, trying to get away from Kazumi but horribly failed as the young lady is already in front of him throwing him questions he can’t even comprehend since he can literally hear his heart beating loudly against his rib cage.
“Oh Kami-sama!” he cried in his thoughts as he walked backwards staring at a mad!Kazumi. “What did I ever do?” he complained. “I promise to be a good boy just let me escape Kazumi’s wrath~! I promise I’ll do my best to avoid walking in when YabuHika are making out. I promise I won’t steal Dai-chan’s pocky and Yama-chan’s strawberries. I promise I won’t read Yuto and Kieto’s diaries and use it to blackmail them whenever I get a small share in our lunch. I promise I won’t hide Ryutaro’s DS under Chinen’s pillow. I promise not to disturb my awesome best friend Inoo Kei whenever he is studying~~~ I’ll be good JUST PLEASE KAMI-SAMA~~~~
Then he remembered something. “Yuya, if you like Kazumi-chan, stop avoiding her and tell her what you feel.” Kei told him
“Uh You’re so stupid~ BAKAKI~” It was Yabu. “I was like that with my Hikaru before stop sulking there and face her!”
He looked at Kazumi. She was demanding for explanations and everything.
“…and then you started to avoid me with no par-”
“I…love you, Kazumi-chan.”
“…cular reas-wait? What?” confusion she spelled over her face as she examined a now blushing Takaki Yuya in front of him. Then she thought that he was having a fever again. She was cut when the young boy suddenly held her hand causing her to jolt a bit.
“I don’t know when, why, how, I too have many questions why I started to act weird around you that day. Why I suddenly get angry when other guys come near you. Kazumi…” he stopped and gazed at her puzzled-expression face in which the young lady almost forgot to breathe. “Nothing has been so clear… the reason why this heart is racing so fast is because it’s telling me that… that I have fallen for you. Kazumi, I love you… will you… accept my feelings for you?”
She was at a loss for words. She doesn’t know what happened but that day was surely sealed with a kiss as a reply to the young man’s question.
.
Kazumi chuckled. For her, that was one hell of a confession since it racked all the nerves out of her. It was totally unexpected. Takaki Yuya, her bestfriend was waaaay lot different to Takaki Yuya, her boyfriend. She rolled to the other side of the bed. She still can’t sleep. “That was… seven years ago.” She murmured. “So many things have changed ne? Yuya? She looked at the digital clock. “Twelve midnight it says huh? Three years Yuya… I’ve been missing you so much. Don’t you remember what you promised that day?”
Three years ago…
“Yuya look! Fireworks! Lovely isn’t it?” Kazumi said as she squeezed her boyfriend’s hand. They were by the sea side. It was summer and they were having a camp on the Southern part of Japan. They wanted to enjoy the night as they heard fireworks can be seen by the sea side so they snuck out of the cottage in the middle of the night.
She felt him move his head to look at her. Her head is leaning against his shoulder. “What?” she questioned as she looked at him too.” You think that’s lovely?” he asked in his ever so gentle voice. “Well… don’t you think so?” this time Kazumi raised a brow. She have zero idea why her boyfriend won’t like the fireworks while he was the one who eagerly insisted on watching fireworks tonight even the odds of them being caught is high. He shook his head. Kazumi almost lost her temper but then was cut by the words that escaped from Yuya’s lips. “It’s because I think the beauty of that fireworks is no match to the beauty you possess inside and out.” He beamed a smile. That same smile years ago when they first met.
“Baka…” she uttered as she playfully slapped his face.
“Oww…that hurts!” he complained giving her a playful punch. She spanked his arm back and stuck her tongue out. “If you just want to see me getting all shy then you won!” she yelled and crossed her arms. Yuya could just laugh as he noticed her pink cheeks turning into crimson.
“Kawaii ne, Kazumi.” He flailed like he is a fan or something similar to that.
“Shut up! I said you won already! Quit telling sweet words! I…I might melt here…” The last came as a whisper.
“Then why don’t you let me melt with you?” he moved closer…and closer…and closer until their lips met. It’s now quiet and the sea is so peaceful. All they could hear were each other’s breathing and their hearts throbbing against their chest. It blended well creating a rhythm that both of them appreciated. It has always been like that each time their lips meet.
“I love you…” Yuya breathed onto her hugging her tightly.
“Same here Yuya…that’ll never change. No matter what, you own this heart. It beats for you and only for you.
“You’re being redundant.” He teased.
She let out a chuckle. “Yes, I AM redundant! And I will never stop being one till I find the words that could surpass the meaning of those three sweet words. But for now, I’ll never get tired of telling you. I love you. I love you. I love you… I love you…
**************
“Don’t cry baby. I’ll be back soon. Three years won’t be too long, I promise. I’ll be texting you, send you e-mail you, and give you a call each day. You’ll not miss me at all, I swear.” Yuya’s lips touched Kazumi’s forehead closing his eyes before his lips landed on Kazumi’s. It was full of sorrow. Yuya knew how long three years could be but tried his best not to be as emotional as his girl is as of the moment.
“Yuya…we’re not kids anymore.” She chuckled as she wiped away her tears.
“I want to promise something. Come on… hook yours into mine.” Kazumi did as she was told to and hooked her pinkie to Yuya’s.
“I, TakaKI Yuya who is holding Ayukawa Kazumi’s pinkie is promising in the name of everything that is enclosed within this universe we’re both living on that III will not stop loving her even our distance is really far and when I come back, I will bring her something she won’t ever forget and will treasure it for the rest of her life. I promise Kazumi…so don’t cry.” He said and pulled her into another embrace.
“Just promise me to make three years fast. If it won’t you’ll receive-”
“A rider kick…yeah of course. Just make sure you’ll be able to hit me.” They both laughed.
They were interrupted by the last call for his flight. They pulled away and both struggled to battle with the tears that is threatening to flow down their cheeks.
“Make sure three years will be quick.”
“I promise babe.” Then he trapped her again into his arms and eventually pulled in for another kiss.
“I love you.”
“I love you too Kazumi.”
*****************
Kazumi sighed “You said three years would be quick. Liar! Then why am I missing you like crazy?” Then she gave the picture of him a peck. Then there was ringing.
“Moshi Moshi?”
“Hey baby. I missed you.”
“You idiot! When are you going home? You said three years would be quick! You lied Yuya! If it’s quick then why am I longing for you this much?” she practically screamed over the phone ranting out what she really felt.
“That’s why I called you.” Came Yuya’s voice. It was gentle. It soothed Kazumi’s ears that it felt like he’s near her. “I’m coming home Kazumi. The long wait is over. You’ll never know. I might just show up when you least expect it. See you soon babe. I love you.” The line went dead before Kazumi could manage to make a reply.
She took a deep breath. “At last…” she murmured in the mid-air “I hope it’ll be sooner.” She closed her eyes and relaxed for a few seconds.
Just then she felt something sharp by her neck. Her whole body began to shake as her heart rate accelerated, hearing someone say “I’ll ask for your life. Will you give it to me?”
Tears began to fall from her eyes. It was non-stop. AS if it was a river making its way down her cheeks. “Take it. I’ll give it to you with all my heart.” She stated her voice already shaking.
“It’s good then.” She felt the sharp object removed from her neck. “I won’t have difficulties then.”
“Yuya…” she rasped out as the guy turned her around and gave him a hug. She pushed him the next second. “You idiot! You made me wait too long.”
“But aren’t you glad that I’m back?” he pouted
“Of course I am! Who wouldn’t”
“Kazumi?” he called out within the embrace. “Do you still remember my promise?”
“All of them.” She answered
“Didn’t I promise to bring something for you when I come back?”
“You did” Kazumi smiled.
“Here. Open it. I hope you like it.” He handed her a small red pouch and her eyes widened as she saw what’s inside.
“Yuya, what’s this?” she questioned holding the item with her fingers.
“A ring.” He answered
“Yes I know it’s a ring Yuya! What the hell is this for?”
Yuya took what she’s holding and said. “Kazumi, will you be my wife and the mother of my future children?”
“Huh?” Kazumi was trying to absorb what she had heard. First, Yuya’s sudden arrival and then this?! Her brain is not functioning well.
“Yuya, why is this so sudden?!” she exclaimed.
He took one step forward and before she knew it, she is already responding to the kiss Yuya is giving her. It was passionate and full of love. This kiss expressed how much they longed for each other’s presence.
“Because I know you’d say ‘yes’ anyway.” He replied after the kiss. “Is there any chance of you saying no?” he continued plastering a frown.
“Baka!” she pushed him a little. “at least give me a time to breath! For heaven’s sake! You surprised me with your sudden arrival and here you are proposing marriage? Oww my poor kokoro-chan…”
Seeing her boyfriend’s expression which really amused her as of the moment, she kissed him and said. “Of course. I’d be glad to be your wife.”
Yuya wanted to shout with joy telling how happy he is but it’s freakin’ two in the morning. He placed the elegant ring on her finger then wrapped in arms around her.
“Yuya…” she called “When you promised me that day, have you already plan to do this?”
“Uh huh…” he answered simply. “Because I knew that my future is with you and I’m destined for that. I love you.” He kissed her forehead as she leaned on his shoulder watching meteor shower on the night sky.
“I love you too Yuya. And yes. My future belongs to you and you alone.” Kazumi closed her eyes. She knew that from the day they’ll exchange vows in front of everyone, she’ll wake up with the same person smiling at her, loving her with all his heart. The person whom she loves most in the entire human race. His name is TAKAKI YUYA.
