So, I've decided that in honor of Pi Day, 2009, I shall attempt my very first meringue. A lemon meringue pie. Of course, if that goes awry, I will have the apple one to fall back on.
03:15pm. Dear Gott en Himmel, what was I thinking? Lemon what? zest? Okay, calm down, you've cooked before, you know which side of a spatula to flip things with, and your experience with cooking on a radiator the past three years has taught you improvisation, if nothing else...calm down, and start separating those eggs!
03:22pm. Eggs separated. Four of them, and the little white coils of chicken dna taken out of the whites... Now...to start cooking the filling. Wait. Cook the filling? What? Maybe I should have just bought some lemon pudding. hah. NEVAIR! I will not admit defeat to mere cornstarch, water, sugar and salt!
03:31pm. Where is the 1/3 cup measuring cup? Aaargh!
03:42pm. Ouch...fresh lemon juice + splinter hole in palm = pain. Fiery juicy pain...ouch. Maybe Rachel Ray should mention this before telling you to squeeze the lemons in the palm of your hand...I'm beginning to hate that cheerful chipmunk faced cooking nazi...
03:55pm. Need music. And a watched pot never boils....neither does a saucepan with your filling...
04:05pm. Meringue...yes, salsa music is playing, and it seems appropriate...go egg whites, go! Emulsify like you've never been emulsified before! On the chemistry geek side, I wonder what exactly cream of tartar does to stabilize the egg white, so it can form the stiff peaks that turn out oh so golden and brown...hmmm...on a side note, typing one handed is more difficult than I remember...
04:10pm. Pie is in the oven. Now, it all comes down to this. Did I succeed? Well, in 10 to 12 minutes, I will find out, eh? After it cools, after it cools. And then, on to the apple version of today...but more on that later...
04:15pm. I'm worried that the filling isn't going to set. Then I'll have lemon meringue soup in a crust. *sigh* hehehe...ah well, pass out the spoons, eh? But the left over filling that wouldn't fit in the pan? OMG...so good...tart sweet...I want a spoon now! *nom nom*
04:22pm. Pie out of oven. Time to see how it sets when it cools. Okay go! heh. Now to core and slice three pounds of apples. apple pies are easy though, so...no stress here.
