FWIW, I stopped submitting to F&SF about two years ago because I don't really like the style of stories they seem to have been picking up. They're more ... magic realism and surrealist than SFF, last I knew, and rarely write and even more rarely enjoy that sort of thing.

Mmm, but... some of what I write is closer than not to magic realism, or at least would tend to appeal to the same crowd IMO, although then we can get into an interesting discussion about where the lines between magic realism and modern fantasy lie.

No, I would say the problem is that they're more or less now a Literary Speculative market, which is a new category I just now made up, but which really ought to already exist. Because the feeling I get when I read a lot of the stories is that the people writing them are trying to write Good Lit-rachoor, and it just so happens some of it has vaguely fantastical elements.

Though I guess you could argue that magic realism itself has a large number of adherents who believe in Lit-rachoor.

Anyhow. I keep trying because a) they pay well and b) they have a good turnaround time, even though unless they change their story type trend the chances of my being accepted are slim to none.

"Magic Realism" or "Slipstream" is usually the catchall term for literary speculative... which is what I was referring to. :)
