Anyone got any experience with Analog to Digital conversions? (i.e. VHS/SVHS/LD to DVD) I'm trying to convert my collection to DVD and I'm not very happy with the quality, especially with the LD->DVD conversion.
You might want to give Dave a call about this. I think he does some experience with both LD to dvd and vhs to DVD conversion with some insane capture card, something like 5-10 MB per second.
I read about some good capture cards. But to use those cards, I'll have to buy a new computer. I've switched to laptops for the past few years, so my old PC is only a Pentium 3, and it's already got a capture card too. (state-of-the-art 5 years ago, and still can capture faster than my PC can store.) Spending 2K to get a new computer and a new card for one-time conversion is sucky. :(
I guess the real issue is that the conversions I have right now does not look good in high-res. I'm using a Panasonic EH55 DVR recorder and it looks great on normal 480i TV. There's only some slight differences between the DVD copy and the original source. But play the DVD in a high resolution monitor, it looks bland and not sharp, and grainy in solid colors. (i.e. I can see the patterns of red color when it should be a solid field of red) Guess they can't be helped since the source is low-res. :(
