Staying up late last night has taught me that I need to figure out what things I can do which are "well-filling"; that is, they make it so that I can do things which require fortitude. This isn't just "fun", it's something different that I don't quite understand ( Read more... )

I perfectly understand - there are things that are a lot of fun but cost a lot of energy. Things that are fun and bring energy, kinda chory things that bring some energy and annoying things that need to be done that just cost energy.

Thanks for actually thinking of this and verbalizing it.

Well, there's a difference between "fun" and "well-filling". Like, playing fighting games is fun. But when I'm done, I don't feel more capable. It's a subtle distinction which I have only recently become aware of.

yeah... I know *exactly* what you're talking about. Research more or less always takes fortitude, so it's been a real pain in the ass here. I found that forcing myself to do one thing which was, objectively and unarguably, "neat" each day helps considerably... although it took a week to really work, and then it's tricky to remember I have to keep it up. There's a cultural thing that you should spend your day-to-day time working and relaxing/zoning out, but intentional frivilous activities that actually make you *happy* should be reserved for weekends and special occasions. I'm pretty sure this is catastrophically incorrect.

I just realized that despite the fact that I've thought really hard about responding to the last several comments you've left on my livejournal, I haven't actually responded to any of them. I really do read them, and I really do listen, it's just that I don't really have anything useful to comment that I imagine you don't already know that I know.
