Parce que Thierry est beaucoup plus beau que Becks...

Should stop listening to radio whilst revising. Five minutes ago, I had to drop the 1553 succession crisis and dance around the room to 'Don't Stop Til You Get Enough'. I HAD to, I tell you ( Read more... )

Football - game for gentlemen played by hooligans. Rugby - game for hooligans played by gentlemen etc, etc.

I prefer rugby - they all seem like such nice middle-class boys with nice middle-class wives (not porn stars, unlike footballers' wives) and the game is more violent. Squee.

Va va voom, indeed.

But bashing the opposition (figuretively of course) is half the point. That's sport - you want your side to win and the other side to lose. It's like war, only without all the shooting (as George Orwell said) and belittling and mocking your opponent is half the point. It can be funny, it can be crude but it's mostly good natured - most, all, of us in the pub last night would give our right arms to be in the same position as the man we'd just called a cunt ( ... )

The thing is, I always have a sneaking suspicion that sometimes, the good-natured nationalism isn't so good-natured after all. I know hooligans are in the minority of football fans, but numbers increase and it's all a little worrying.

Gah, I'm just a Francophile. And a Thierry Henry fan. Not that I've ever seen him play football...

I think if you did a sociological study of football hooligans you'll find it's not the football that attracts them, it's the togetherness. The feeling of community. And it's a strong attraction - I have to say, when I go to the pub to watch an England game I could watch at home, I go because of the people not because of the fact I'll be spending a tenner I don't have and standing to watch a game I don't need to. I do agree - sometimes nationlism isn't good-natured. But it only extends to how far the England team have gone - do we have a problem with Greece right now? Of course not. But if we play them in the Quarter-Finals - oh hell, we'll find a problem with Greece.

I've been an Arsenal fan for over 13 years and Thierry Henry is simply the best player I've ever seen. To see him live is a joy. He's indescribable - so I won't try.

I agree - I thought the shorter hair that he had on the Vodafone ads was best. Not that I'm bothered, ahem...

Roddick is a poohead. with a silly beard.

And i have NO patriotic feelings - so HA HA England. Man i laughed so hard.

Would Thierry be called Terry Henry (pronounce like the boys name) in England?
