Travels of the Trifecta! Timeline III

Feb 21, 2010 21:43

Apparently I tl;dr even when I make abridged notes for my chapter plans, because space limitations mean I need another post to continue onward with that. So yeah. These are the latest Trifecta plans, though it'll be a loooong, long time before they come into play and are subject to change. It's officially planned out to Chapter 37.

Plans for reference:
Chapters 1 - 15
Chapters 16 - 30

TRAVELS OF THE TRIFECTA!

CHAPTER 31 (UN-BARRY-ABLE ANTICIPATION!)

DP183 (League Unleashed!)

- Off-screen: Following immediately after the last chapter, Ash and Nando meet briefly after the preliminary match-ups are determined. Ash & Co. try to figure out which combination of Ash's Pokemon will defeat Nando, as they already witnessed a strong performance from him in the Grand Festival.

- Paul walks by Ash & Co. on accident and Dawn calls him out. They make small-talk, reaffirming that the two must do their best to make it so they battle in the League. Not really in the mood to talk, Paul brings Ash back down to earth and reminds him that every trainer in the competition has earned eight badges just like they did and unless Ash brings out his absolute strongest to the table (like Paul plans to), in all likelihood Ash will lose before even getting to battle Paul in the League, which naturally angers Ash. Paul makes his exit shortly afterward. He and Conway regroup and relax in their hotel room, deliberating on how to take out their first opponents, both of which are strangers to them. Conway goes outside for some fresh air and realizes what a beautiful night it is, dragging Paul out to see as well. The atmosphere is reminiscent of the day way back in Chapter 8 when Paul spent the night at Conway's house; the two spending much of the night in Conway's backyard stargazing while helping each other build their strategies for their respective Gym Leaders at the time. Conway expresses deep gratitude for Paul's help, and Paul says the feeling is mutual, as it was only Conway's strategy that allowed Paul to defeat Candice in Chapter 19. Paul and Conway understand they are no longer really allies in this competition and Conway strongly desires to eventually come across both Paul and Ash, which Paul doesn't say much in response as he isn't certain how things will play out. Both Ash and Conway have become extremely strong and competent trainers and Paul has a number of physical ailments that he feels is holding him back. Conway assures Paul that he's the strongest trainer he's ever become familiar with and looked to his examples for strength back in Chapter 12 when Conway decided to take the path of battling in the first place. They promise that should they not cross paths in the Lily of the Valley Conference that they will have their own personal battle after the tournament is over.

- The next day, the preliminary rounds commence. Reggie, Maylene, Roark, Byron, and Whitney are watching on TV (Reggie somewhat stabilized as he remembers about the Sinnoh League and his brother). Brandon suddenly shows up along with Palmer, who Brandon ran into along the way and discussed his situation. Palmer couldn't resist a proper reunion with both Brandon and Byron and decided to come by. Reggie does not take well to Brandon's presence and starts to destabilize, but Brandon (with the help of his friends) manages to hush it down as he reminds Reggie that they need to keep an eye on Paul's performance in the competition. The sight of seeing Brandon actively interested in his family's affairs manage to calm Reggie down immensely. Palmer is aware that Barry is in the competition and is delighted to have the privilege of seeing his own son's progress in the League, which leads to some bickering between Brandon and Palmer as to who's going to win/get further in the competition.

- Barry wins in his preliminary match, very proud of his performance. On his way back to the stands, he passes by Tobias, whose ominous appearance startles Barry as he watches the man walk to the stadium to begin his match. Barry watches out of sheer curiosity and is horrified when Tobias single-handedly defeats his opponent with only one Pokemon: Darkrai.

- News about "the Darkrai trainer" spreads about quickly as Conway, situated in another stadium, learns about him while studying various competitors via his laptop. Suddenly, he's called in for his preliminary match, which Conway easily wins with his Heracross, Castform, and Jynx. Paul is situated in the third stadium and intently watches Conway's battle while waiting to be called on for his match. He studies Conway's technique intently and the battle manages to end just as Paul is called up for his preliminary match. He's counting on Honchkrow, Weavile, and Gliscor to get him through the preliminaries.

- Barry finds Dawn and Brock in the stands after winning his match, telling them in a panicked tone about "the Darkrai trainer", neither of which pay any mind to because they're busy watching Ash battle Nando. Barry is offended at first, but forgets about it when he sees that Ash is battling and joins the two in watching him. Later on, Conway suddenly appears before the group after winning his preliminary match, deciding to watch Ash's battle as well as spend some time with Dawn. He also "meets" Barry, who has forgotten all about Conway and their misadventures together as they hadn't seen each other for over ten chapters and Barry apparently found Conway to be a forgettable person. However, Conway is not offended, preferring not to let on to Dawn and the others that he had any prior association with Barry, much like how he neglected to mention this fact to Paul after reuniting with him.

- Ash defeats Nando's Armaldo, Kricketune, and Roserade with Staraptor, Quilava, and Heracross. As a result, Ash passes his preliminary round and Nando decides to take his leave shortly after, wishing Ash good luck. Shortly after, it is shown on the large screens on the stadiums that Paul has passed the preliminary rounds as well.

- At the end of the day, Paul and Conway regroup and discuss what they have learned after their first League battles. Conway informs Paul of the mysterious Darkrai trainer, which is daunting enough for Paul to consider a change in his strategy. Understanding that Takuto is most likely the biggest threat in the League, Paul decides to refrain from using Torterra until he reaches Tobias, knowing Torterra will need to be completely at 100% in order to stand a chance. Conway agrees to do similarly with Slowking. Then, Conway returns Electabuzz's Pokeball to Paul, telling him to let it out to see if his theory worked. Unsure of what Cownay meant, Paul lets his Pokemon out to find that he finally has an Electivire.

CHAPTER 32 (AN APPAULING LANDSLIDE LOSS!)

DP184 (Casting a Paul on Barry!)

- The second round of the Lily of the Valley Conference goes by like a breeze. At Reggie's house, all present parties (Reggie, Maylene, Roark, Byron, Brandon, Palmer, and Whitney) start taking sides on who they want to win. Naturally, Brandon and Reggie are rooting for Paul and Palmer is all for Barry. Maylene would prefer to see Ash or Conway win, though takes note that Conway is very inexperienced compared to Ash, so she's mostly on Ash's side. Byron takes Ash's side as well (though he has a soft spot for Conway), arrogantly claiming that Brandon and Palmer's sons are wimps compared to his son, which Roark shoves his father for upon reminding him that he is not in the tournament. Roark admits he can't decide between Ash and Paul. Whitney roots for Paul just to suck up to Reggie, even though she is personally not fond of Paul based on what she remembers of him, and it shows. They witness Paul getting through the second round, putting him in the running for the third, which is narrowed down to sixteen trainers. They witness the other three boys win their next matches, and thus the match-ups for the third round are announced.

- At the competition itself, Paul/Conway/Barry/Ash look on as they see who they're pitted up against next, and some are less enthused than others when it's revealed: Conway vs Ash, Paul vs Barry.

- Barry nearly hyperventilates with both joy and anxiety, as he's desired a battle with Paul for ages now and is finally getting one. He's determined to find out everything he can on Paul, much to the bewilderment of Ash & Co. Conway feels slightly downtrodden as he realizes his position; only able to reach Paul if he could defeat the very experienced Ash first. On the bright side, Conway realizes if he does defeat Ash, he'll look all the better in Dawn's eyes... or so he perceives. He uses that hope to keep him upbeat as he briefly mingles with Ash & Co. before disappearing, immediately headed for the computer lab so he can find out everything he can about Ash... not to mention find new data on Tobias and his performance today.

- Conway is surprised to see Paul is way ahead of him, already in the computer lab looking up data on Barry. He warns Paul that Barry is coming right for him and to prepare for that, as Barry could potentially be volatile. Paul asks Conway what he means by that, as this is the first time Conway talks about Barry in a manner suggesting he's known Barry for a while (which was an honest mistake on Conway's part). Conway says there's no time to explain and ducks for cover underneath the desk on the opposite side of Paul. Paul is bewildered by this and is soon interrupted with a crowd bursting into the lab: the usual suspects. Barry asks Paul if he's really looking him up for their battle, to which Paul admits to, a little put off and confused as to why Barry's so excited. Again, Paul is intrigued by Barry as he recalls his future opponent is a Frontier Brain's son, just like him. However, Paul is unable to bear the crowd, so he leaves the facility completely. Barry checks on Paul's data soon after, but then Conway sees it fit to troll both Barry and Ash simultaneously, suddenly rising up from the other side of the lab. He decides to inform Ash of the mysterious Darkrai trainer to shake him up before their fated battle. He disappears again shortly after, and everyone eventually heads back to the arenas.

- Naturally, the tension is high at Reggie's house as Brandon and Palmer are incredibly anxious about which of their sons will progress to the quarterfinals. Byron tries to mediate, but he proves to not be very good about it. Reggie is getting increasingly uncomfortable with the crowd surrounding him.

- On a rocky battlefield, Paul and Barry begin their battle. Ultimately, Paul makes a clean sweep of Barry's Empoleon, Skarmory, and Hitmonlee with Ursaring, Magmortar, and Electivire. Paul progresses on to the quarterfinals; Barry's placing is in the Top 16. Conway surveys this battle alone and is quite joyous of the result, thinking it served Barry right for trying to intrude on his and Paul's rivalry. Conway's dreaming of making it to the Top 8 soon and not only impress Dawn, but finally get to battle Paul proper.

- As Paul heads back to the hotel, Barry chases after Paul and stops him. Barry asks if they can battle again someday, and Paul affirms that they will. He keeps it short and brief since he's not in much of a talking mood, and so Paul leaves it at that and walks off. Conway was stalking the group quietly all this time, pleased that Paul was brushing Barry away, though annoyed that he'd be open to another battle with Barry given how one-sided the battle they just had was. He makes his presence known after Paul leaves, arrogantly declaring that he will defeat Ash, to which Ash objects to. That battle will be had the next day.

- Palmer is in a perpetually mopey state after watching Barry lose, especially in a 0-3 manner. While his whining annoys the others, Brandon is even more irritating by being even more pompous upon seeing Paul decimate Barry in battle. He's overwhelmed with hope that Paul learned from his example after all and is changing for the better. Reggie isn't sure what to make of this; he's happy for Paul, but feels bad for Barry and Palmer. He isn't sure if Paul has reached his peak yet, but somehow, Reggie is doubting it. Still, he remains hopeful that Paul can pull off another victory soon, and he finds it hard to decide if he wants Ash or Conway to prevail in their match.

- At nighttime, Paul and Conway regroup. Conway asks Paul upfront why he's so lenient and accepting of Barry even though he's obviously an airhead and is riddled with flaws as far as battling style goes. Paul simply tells him that he and Barry relate on a level only shared by Reggie before. He admits Barry is pretty annoying and needs a lot of work in the skills department, but at the same time Paul is reluctant to be so harsh to someone of his own kind, figuring Barry has a rough time with is father just like Paul does with Brandon, though that couldn't be any further from the truth. Paul warns Conway about letting his emotions get in the way with his battle with Ash tomorrow, pointing out to Conway that Barry's unbridled emotions played a huge part in costing him the match. Paul can relate to this since that was how he lost against Brandon in Chapter 15. Conway apparently heeds the warning, but proves to have a hard time controlling said emotions.

CHAPTER 33 (PUNCHING LOOPHOLES THROUGH YOUR LOGIC!)

DP185 (Working on a Right Move!)

- Paul is already having doubts about Conway's chances by the morning as he finds that Conway had very little sleep last night; he stayed up late finalizing his strategy against Ash. He wants to say something to Conway, but knows the best way to handle this is to let Conway find out on his own the hard way. Tough love is back in action. Once it's a reasonable hour in the morning, Conway's up and ever-vigilant, going off to spy on Ash's last-minute training to ascertain which 3 Pokemon he'll be using in their battle. However, Conway's motivation mainly is to impress Dawn (though he doesn't bother her or anyone else at this time) and his judgment becomes clouded. He's quick to assume that Infernape, Glalie, and Torterra will be used since Ash is presently training with them, especially since Infernape has now perfected its Flare Blitz move. Conway had done some research on Ash's data (though still looked more thoroughly at Tobias' data), but knowing Ash had a simplistic nature again made Conway prone to make assumptions. He'd done so before and won several important battles this way; Conway believes there's no need to fix what isn't broken. When Dawn talks about how defeating Conway won't be easy, he's easily smitten with his unrequited love interest once more, but restrains himself enough as he remembers he has a battle to win. He figures if he defeats Ash, Dawn might see him not just as a superior trainer, but also a better traveling companion and partner (though he is not concerned about Ash and Dawn being in a relationship - Conway's more focused on pushing *Kenny* out of Dawn's mind).

- Proof that Paul and Conway have come to be close friends now: though Conway is pretending to maintain his cool and calm demeanor while the other Top 16 matches go on before it's his turn, Paul can tell easily that Conway's faking it and gives him a pep talk to calm his nerves. Conway admits he's dreading a mere possibility of Dawn cheering for Ash rather than him, but Paul snaps him out of it, telling him even if she were, he wouldn't be able to hear her due to the sheer number of audience in attendance that would drown out anything she might scream and shout; she would be nigh impossible to even see. Harshly, Paul demands Conway get his head in the game if he really wants to face him in the League eventually. This succeeds in straightening Conway out for the most part, but even slight apprehension with the stakes this high naturally have Conway on guard, which is all Paul thinks Conway needs. As Conway's called up from the waiting room, Paul stops him briefly to wish him good luck. And as a friendly parting gesture, for the very first time, Paul gives Conway a high-five before the two walk in opposite directions down the hall. Conway feels he is ready now.

- Conway and Ash have their 3-on-3 battle on a grass (plain) terrain; Ash defeats Conway's Shuckle, Lickilicky, and Dusknoir with Noctowl, Donphan, and Gible. Ash's Gible masters Draco Meteor at last, which is what gave Ash the edge. The battle was extremely close to being a draw as Gible (Ash's last usable Pokemon) was on the verge of fainting as Dusknoir fell to the ground. Predictably, Conway lost due to having too much of a routine-oriented strategy that was easy to predict by Ash after it was done so many times. Paul was sure to watch this battle from the audience stands rather than the TV in the waiting room, wanting to see every relevant detail to the battle and determine how much Conway has grown as a trainer. Despite Conway losing, Paul is quite impressed and even favored a particular move in the battle that he decides to implement as well (with his own little twist) as an homage to his fallen friend.

- The quarterfinal (Top 8 battles) matches are determined, scheduled to begin tomorrow. Paul and Ash are finally pitted against one another for their ultimate clash.

- In a show of good sportsmanship, Conway takes his loss with dignity and congratulates Ash on a job well done after they've gotten out of the stadium area. To Conway's relief, Dawn is present to tell him personally that his battle with Ash was great from beginning to end and that it could have gone either way. She was concerned about Ash's chances because she knew from experience battling with and against Conway in the past, which does wonders for his self-confidence. He thanks her humbly. Dawn compliments Barry for a job well done too, but both he and Conway say that a Top 16 placing is not all that great, especially compared to Dawn achieving runner-up status in the Grand Festival. Ash reassures them both that it's actually a sign that they're going to be very good trainers in the future when they gain more experience (after Barry and Conway admit this is their first League), as Ash also placed in the Top 16 when he competed in the Indigo League; his first. Dawn invites Conway to hang around them while they continue to watch Ash progress, but Conway respectfully declines (much to Dawn's surprise), vaguely explaining that he is needed elsewhere and will be less of a burden. As he leaves, Dawn looks concerned for him.

- After settling in the hotel for the night, Conway immediately apologizes for not being able to defeat Ash. Paul tells him there's no need to apologize, as he felt this upcoming match was practically destined to happen; it was just unfortunate that the price needed to pay for that was Conway getting being forced out of the running. They were so close to being able to battle as well... Conway snaps himself out of it, saying the only concern from now on will be making sure Paul defeats Ash.

- Off-screen: At night, Ash makes alterations to his team in preparation for Paul. He soon sees his Gliscor soaring in the sky to reunite with him, having completed its training with the Air Battle Master.

CHAPTER 34 (GOING BY THE RIVAL RULE BOOK!)

DP186 (Familiarity Breeds Strategy!)

- The full battle rounds begin; Ash and Paul's battle takes place on a traditional stadium. It's Ash's Pikachu, Staraptor, Gliscor, Buizel, Torterra, and Infernape vs Paul's Aggron, Gastrodon, Drapion, Froslass, Ninjask, and Electivire.

- Paul allows his Aggron and Gastrodon to be defeated relatively easily so he can confirm that Ash is using the exact same team against him now that he used in their full battle at Lake Acuity. He sends out Drapion to poison Ash's side of the field with Toxic Spikes in order to truly start ravaging his rival's team.

CHAPTER 35 (RESOLUTION MAKES THE HEART GROW STRONGER!)

DP187 (A Real Rival Rouser!) - DP188 (Battling a Thaw in Relations!)

- After a hard-fought battle, Paul loses to Ash in a close final battle between Infernape and Electivire and finally sees the power in Infernape truly realized thanks to his rival's efforts. He's now able to fully respect both Ash and Infernape, even willing to admit (to himself, at least) that he had been wrong about the two all along. Though Paul lost the League again (and once more within the quarterfinals), for once he doesn't break down into tears in private as he always did before. He's disappointed to lose, but feels oddly content with how great the battle was and knows the better man came out the victor.

- Conway feels worse for Paul than the actual loser of the battle himself, but Paul prevents Conway from blaming himself for the loss, as Conway believes Paul might've progressed on to the semi-finals if he had defeated Ash before in the Top 16 bracket. After Paul reassures Conway, the only real regret left between the two is that they never got a chance to face off in the League. Since Paul has no desire to remain on the island now that he's lost the League, he's quick to take his leave back to the hotel and check out. Conway's not as eager to leave, but agrees to follow and meet Paul when he was ready to go at the port; he's aware Paul has a small bit of unfinished business left before he can truly leave Lily of the Valley Island.

- Cynthia catches sight of Ash dashing off towards the entrance of the League festivities, inherently knowing who he's going after. Paul left a note for Ash, informing his former foe that he's leaving early and to not look for him. He also thanks Ash for the great battle in the note, but Ash won't take this sitting down. He manages to catch Paul just as he's going down the stairs and the two exchange their parting words proper. Since he didn't have a chance to congratulate Ash after the battle, he takes the time to do so now, telling Ash Infernape had become very powerful. Ash asks Paul where he's going, and Paul for once doesn't take this as Ash being too nosy. He tells Ash he's aiming for a return trip to Snowpoint City soon in order to challenge Brandon for a rematch, knowing Ash will understand his motives. They wish each other good luck, though Paul is almost certain Ash will lose to Tobias tomorrow. Before Paul leaves Ash (expecting to never see him again), Ash calls out to him to request that they battle again in the near future. Shocked and flattered at the same time, Paul won't let Ash see his expressions, but extends an acknowledging hand towards him, telling Ash without the use of words that he accepts the challenge and looks forward to the day he and Ash cross paths again. Paul is being sincere - he no longer feels a loathing for Ash. He struggles to call him a friend, precisely, but Paul cannot deny the two are on good terms now and cannot ignore the strong bond formed between the two trainers through Infernape - that bond would always be present no matter how far apart Ash and Paul were.

- While Ash prepares to face Tobias, Conway urges Paul to at least stay at the hotel one more night to watch on TV how Ash fares against Tobias in the semi-finals. Both are interested to see how this battle goes, given that the two were defeated by Ash in this competition. Paul concedes, telling Conway of his plans for the future after they leave the island. He asks Conway what he plans to do, but Conway admits he's still taking his time and weighing his options as always, but he clearly looks eager at the prospect of Paul and Brandon's rematch.

CHAPTER 36 (ON THE ROUTE AGAIN!)

DP189 (The Semi-Final Frontier!) - DP190 (The Brockster Is In!)

- The semi-finals of the Sinnoh League Conference commence; Ash's entire team (Pikachu, Sceptile, Heracross, Swellow, Torkoal, & Gible) loses 2-6 against Tobias, though Sceptile and Pikachu manage to take down Tobias' Darkrai and Latios; something no other trainer, including the one who made it to the finals with Tobias, managed to do. Paul and Conway take their leave after seeing Ash lose his battle. Tobias wins the Sinnoh League Conference, the closing ceremonies commence, and Ash & Co. (plus Barry) rest up while thinking about what to do from here, as everyone's futures are uncertain and haven't had much thought put into them.

- Off-screen: Ash & Co. part from Barry and take a ferry out to sea in order to return to Twinleaf Town, where Dawn's adventure began. During the trip, several baby Pokemon become severely ill and Brock takes it upon himself to care for them all during a massive Tentacruel crisis. Brock's Happiny finally evolves into Chansey and uses its Softboiled move to heal the ill Pokemon. Brock's efforts capture the attention of a Nurse Joy, who strongly suggests that Brock consider a career as a Pokemon Doctor. Though Brock has aspired to become a Pokemon Breeder for so many years, he begins to seriously think about where his strengths truly lie and strongly considers to follow Nurse Joy's advice. Soon after, the ferry arrives in Twinleaf Town and Ash & Co. take up residence at Dawn's house for a couple of days.

- Paul and Conway return to Veilstone City. Before Conway goes back to his house for the first time in months and reveals himself in the flesh to his family, he requests a battle with Paul since they didn't have the opportunity to do so in the Sinnoh League. Reggie is all for this idea, as is Paul. The two have a full battle in the backyard, but surprisingly it ultimately ends up in a draw.

- Conway parts with Paul, though cryptic in nature as he says "for now" they both need some time alone to figure out their next course of action, and whether it will involve the two together or going their separate ways.

- Reggie questions Paul's intent to re-challenge Brandon now since he has not yet completed a Battle Frontier: something Brandon made clear from the beginning when he issued the challenge. Paul is not deterred, however, saying he has made such great progress and is in full control of his emotions now. He wants to at least prove that to Brandon before leaving Sinnoh to embark on his next journey. He journeys up to Snowpoint City again by himself, but feels he does not need to push himself like he did the first time and takes the easy route up, reaching his destination quickly and safely. Brandon, however, will not battle Paul just yet. He commends his son for a job well done at the Sinnoh League, but holds firm on the original requirements Paul needs to accomplish before becoming able to truly battle him. Brandon also says Paul still is not at his peak despite what he's seen, and instructs Paul to choose which Battle Frontier he wishes to conquer. Ultimately, Paul chooses the Kanto Battle Frontier and promises to see Brandon as soon as he acquires the six Symbols he needs. Should Reggie challenge Brandon before Paul does, Paul assures he will be in attendance when that day comes regardless of what he is doing.

- Paul runs into Candice and Zoey one more time before leaving Snowpoint City completely. Showing signs of change already, he congratulates Zoey on her winning the Sinnoh Grand Festival (Zoey is surprised that Paul even knew at all) and thanks Candice for all of her help in the past, since she was greatly involved in helping Paul recover when he was first diagnosed with his disease. He parts with the girls on good terms, wishing them the best... but true in his inherent nature, he warns Zoey to not let herself slip off the pedestal and always maintain a strong identity now that she bears the responsibility of being a Top Coordinator. It's a pleasant meeting overall, but also surreal.

- Conway has thought long and hard about what he wishes to do now that his whole life is ahead of him. He learns from Reggie what Paul had decided to do next and plans out his next move accordingly. While Reggie awaits Paul's brief return home to gather his belongings before embarking on a ship to the Kanto region, a surprise visitor comes through his front door...

CHAPTER 37 (TRAINERS TOGETHER, POKEMON FOREVER!)

DP191 (Memories are Made of Bliss!)

- Reggie is surprised when Barry arrives at his house for a surprise visit. He had snooped through Conway's belongings before in the past to find Paul's address and decided to pop in at the first opportunity to challenge him to a rematch. Paul is not yet home from his journey to Snowpoint, however, so Barry decides to wait and take the opportunity to get to know his idol's brother. Reggie gets along with Barry very well, vaguely recognizing him from descriptions he's read in Palmer's emails to Brandon. Barry finally learns that Paul and Reggie are the sons of the Pyramid King and is elated to find that he has so much in common with them; he's even more excited when he learns that his father is one of Paul's father's best friends. Reggie jokingly says that Brandon considered Byron and Palmer like brothers to him since he abandoned his parents long ago, hence those two were the only semblance of a "family" Brandon had before he got married. Due to this, Reggie considers Barry an honorary cousin and Barry is honored, as that means he's considered an honorary relative of Paul as well (despite Paul not knowing about this).

- Paul is shocked to see Barry in his house upon his return as he announces his decision to traverse the Kanto Battle Frontier as Reggie did before him. He's very put-off by Barry's overt admiration and even more disgruntled when he learns Barry's considered a member of the family by Reggie. He denies Barry's request for a rematch, saying he wants to leave for Kanto ASAP. Barry, having never been to Kanto before, begs Paul to come along for the trip. Paul doesn't want Barry slowing him down, but soon has no choice as Reggie insists that he allow Barry to accompany him, much like how he forced Conway on Paul during chapter 8. In an attempt to better himself after his defeat by Ash, Paul consciously tries to be less of a jerk and lets Barry come to Kanto with him, but only on the condition that Barry doesn't hold him back. Barry tells Paul he'll be training every day so that they'll be more evenly matched whenever they battle again, so Reggie suggests Barry to collect Gym Badges in Kanto and perhaps try out the Indigo League. Paul's only going to focus on the Battle Frontier as he already has eight Kanto badges, but he is admtiTtedly intrigued by the prospect and reluctantly agrees to let Barry start a new League-conquering quest alongside his mission to conquer the Battle Frontier.

- Finally, Paul and Barry traverse a short distance south to Pastoria City in order to board a ship near Lake Valor that will take the two straight to the Kanto region. As they approach the port, both are startled by Conway's sudden presence; as if he'd been expecting Paul. He's less than thrilled to see Barry, but tries to ignore that minor inconvenience as he announces to Paul that he's made his decision. He had eavesdropped in his own special creepy way yesterday to find out where Paul was going next, as Conway has decided that he will continue to remain at Paul's side for the next journey. Now that Conway no longer has emotional baggage in the form of his cousin and Team Galactic, Conway wishes to have a wholesome journey with his best friend. He's intrigued when he's told that Paul will be conquering the Battle Frontier and Barry will be collecting Gym Badges, as Conway informs them since he's now free to pursue any career route he wishes to, he will now walk the path of a Coordinator and participate in Kanto's Contests, aiming for the Kanto Grand Festival as his ultimate goal. Close as Paul and Conway have grown over the months, Paul is not hesitant to let Conway come aboard with him and Barry and carry out his journey in conjunction with his own.

- Paul now has his own traveling trio of friends: he will conquer the Kanto Battle Frontier, Barry will challenge Pokemon Gyms and make his way into the Indigo League, and Conway will participate in Contests across the region until he qualifies for the Kanto Grand Festival. None of them are aware that they will be meeting both new and familiar faces as they progress in this new journey.

- Off-screen: Dawn is contacted by Hermione of Hearthome City, a judge from the Hearthome Collection show (DP086 / Arriving in Style!) which Dawn participated in and won. She has chosen Dawn's Buneary to model for the Poke Stylist magazine and wishes to discuss the matter with Dawn in Hearthome City. Due to this, she is unable to follow Ash and Brock as they return to their native region for the time being. After calming down an upset Piplup and blasting Team Rocket off one final time, Ash & Co. watch Elite Four member Flint battle Cynthia for the championship in a televised event. Though Flint puts up a good fight, Cynthia retains her title. This re-ignites Ash's desire to one day qualify for the Champions League (which Cynthia said before she believes both Ash and Paul will be competing there in the near future) and will continue his path to become a master. Despite Dawn's setback with the magazine industry, she still desires to become Top Coordinator and believes her time to shine will be imminent, given that she was runner-up in her very first Grand Festival. Brock announces that he's decided to quit following the path of a Pokemon Breeder and become a Pokemon Doctor instead. Because of this, he will no longer be able to travel with Ash and friends since he will have to remain in his hometown of Pewter City to study. After a long year of journeying with adventures by the dozen, Ash, Brock, and Dawn must go their separate ways. Shortly after these resolutions are made, Dawn bids Ash and Brock farewell at the ferry port as they depart the Sinnoh region and head on home. Though Dawn is sad to see her friends go, she knows her adventures are not over, and no matter where she is or whoever she ends up traveling with next (if anybody at all), Ash and Brock are still with her in spirit. After she is finished with her business in Hearthome City, Dawn still plans to journey to the Kanto region. Whether Ash is with her or not, she wishes to experience the kind of place her friends grew up in and look into competing in Kanto's Contests to try her luck at achieving the title of Top Coordinator there.

- Off-screen: Ash and Brock remain together until they reach a familiar fork in the route they had come across over a year ago after Ash conquered Kanto's Battle Frontier. Both feel deja vu from the last time they parted ways (though their separation did not last long), but this time they know it's the end of an era. Ash and Brock wish each other the best of luck in their future endeavors and share a subtle, but heartfelt farewell.

- As Brock returns home in Pewter City, he is given a warm welcome by every member of his large family, and all are excited to learn about his new goal to become a Pokemon Doctor. While preparing right away for his studies by applying for internship at Pewter City's Pokemon Center, Brock hopes (but is optimistic) that the family ties in Paul and Reggie's family have mended, as he'd long been concerned for both of them since he learned that they were related to Brandon (and managed to never tell Ash or Dawn about this revelation). Somehow, he feels both are doing better than ever before and can rest at ease for good, closing the book on that subject. Meanwhile, Ash eagerly dashes back to his home in Pallet Town. Delia has already prepared a large meal for her son to welcome him back; Professor Oak, Tracey, and Gary are also present to give Ash a warm welcome and congratulations for his Top 4 rank in the Sinnoh League. This is the first sign of true progress in Ash's goal in years and in recognition of that, they all throw a small party for Ash while everyone catches up on what's gone on in each others' lives. Ash tells them all about how he and Paul have made amends and ended their rivalry, though they're sure to battle the next time they meet. Everyone, especially Delia, is proud of how Ash carried himself throughout his Sinnoh journey; even Gary openly admits how impressive Ash is and how much he's matured over the years since his first day as a Pokemon Trainer. Everyone admires the Pokemon Ash acquired in the Sinnoh region that are now taking residence in the vast backyard of Professor Oak's residence, getting acquainted with the mass of Pokemon Ash caught in the other regions he traveled.

- Eventually, Ash is asked what he will do and where he will go from here. However, Ash hasn't the faintest clue of what his next step will be and for once is not in a hurry to run off on a new journey. Everyone else agrees that Ash deserves a good, long rest and simply enjoy being home for the first time in years. There's no rush in getting Ash to decide where to go next. Eventually, Professor Oak will invite Ash and Delia to accompany him on a vacation to the distant Unova region, where the professor is to attend a seminar. While he's there on business, Ash and Delia can experience the culture of Unova. It's so far off that they will have to go there by airplane, and since it's just a vacation, Ash has no inclination to bring any Pokemon along other than Pikachu, or even his journey gear. Little does he know, however, after a number of mishaps occurring once Ash arrives in Unova, he will decide that his next journey is to be in Unova to participate in its League Conference.

- While Ash embarks on his Unova journey, Paul, Conway, and Barry make landfall in Kanto at Vermilion City's port. The trio start anew and begin their next adventure... but in an alleyway shrouded in darkness where the three can be overheard, a teen around their age with long red hair eavesdrops on their conversation, but remains hidden and silent. Upon hearing of Paul's goals in particular and the mention of Paul's desire to defeat and surpass his father to put him in his place, this mysterious young man pegs Paul alone as his adversary/rival that he will defeat at every twist and turn whenever they meet proper in the future.
