minor? Zelda spoilers desu ;-;
I figure I need to talk a little bit more indepth about my journey through Twilight Princess, while I still have the chance. No point in plot speculation, since pretty much everyone but me knows the complete story, but I can still document my pathetic attempts at dungeon-crawling and boss-beating.
For the record, I've never been a very good Zelda player. I grew up watching my brother play videogames, which means I have never personally played Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask. Once, I tried to backtrack and played the rom of Link to the Past, but I got too scared of the Dark World, so I never completed the Dark World Dungeons. I rented Wind Waker sometime last year, but I didn't get very far, and eventually had to return it.
All that considered, Twilight Princess is technically the first Zelda game I'm going to beat.
As I mentioned, I do get scared. It's not so much fear as it is I lose faith in my gaming abilities. In the case of Link to the Past, the daunting task of going through all the dungeons and getting the prize without dying scared me away from the game. But what, you say, dying? You were playing a rom! Just press F4 and start over! And that's where I laugh at myself. I do have a fear of killing the character. Even when I can recover, I'm terrified of letting him die. Go figure.
Of course there are other things. Sometimes the music gets too creepy for me to play at night. Sometimes I can't handle that pressure, so I save and try again when it's not night. Other times I just simply don't like that feeling of being alone. With the dark theme of Twilight Princess especially, it can get a little unnerving.
With all that in mind, let's start my trek through Twilight Princess. I had played through the Ordon Village level before, but never beyond that. So it got really exciting right around the time Ilia was taken.
My first foray into the Twilight Realm was a lot of fun. I love playing with Wolf Link, and Midna amused me more than I thought she would. (Like everyone else, her voice/laugh makes me smile.) The broken down and destroyed Hyrule Castle in the Twilight Realm was amazing, though it still made me wish I could have seen it before the change to hazy black pixels. I can only imagine how gorgeous the snow would have been on those rooftops.
And then the moment my story-deprived fangirl heart was waiting for: Zelda. Oh come on, everyone knew it was Zelda the moment we saw the hooded figure in the trailers. Who else could it be, Grandma? LULZ.
I noticed that they had shrunk the Shiekah symbol on the back of her cloak. Wonder what made them do that. Anyway, the cutscene that told of Hyrule's downfall to twilight was gorgeous. Zelda has such an air of power around her, like a true ruler. I've always gotten the impression of her being weak and the stereotypical damsel in distress. Wind Waker, which tried to break that, felt too fake. But Twilight Princess got it right. The honorable ruler, who took the lesser of two evils to save her land.
The dramatic escape back to Ordon, the stealing of a sword and shield. Poor Link, being hated just because of his form. Midna taunted him, "the lonely hero." People will never know what he's done. That breaks my heart.
Immediately after that I had to go help Faron's spirit and bring back light to that land. ): Getting the light back was traditional item gathering, tedious work. But I loved the embodiment of the gods. I think so far Ordona is my favorite design. And then Link's transformation back to human, equipped with the green tunic of legend.
The next stop was Forest Temple, which let me say, I hated vehemently. I'm not much of a dungeon fan. All the Zelda people I talk to? They love the dungeons, the puzzles. It just frustrates me. I want to advance the story, not spend 1.5 hours saving monkeys and backtracking to 5 different rooms 7 times. And then, I've always sucked at dungeon boss fights. It's the combination of the camera (which always sucks and is difficult to control), trying not to be hit, and attempting to aim with strategy, so you can hit and beat the boss. I can't multi-task all of that. It's even more difficult with the Wiimote and nunchuck.
Of course I eventually beat the damn boss, but it took me a while.
After that, I got to roam through Hyrule Field (Faron Province), which was gorgeous. I spent a lot of time exploring, so I also got to experience the setting of the sun, nighttime and the creepy wall of Twilight, and then a thunderstorm! Which was creepy too. Eventually I went back into the Twilight Realm, though. Y halo thar Wolf Link, nice 'ta see you again.
Went onward to Kakariko Village, which was very disturbing in the Twilight Realm. The game pulls off the concept of unending fear very well. Naturally I end up restoring light back to the land (but not after a trek into the base of Death Mountain. What was I thinking? Of course there's going to be a Death Mountain in Twilight Princess! Ugh, not looking forward to that...) Even in the light, Kakariko Village isn't too happy-looking of a place. The spirit of Kakariko, Eldin, thanked me, the Ordon kids are saved, etc.
That's where I've stopped now. According to the Prima guide (which I've mostly used for dungeons and light tear-collecting), I've got a couple of tasks to do in and around Kakariko Village, then I'm off to the next dungeon: Goron Mines...
