Back in Action!

Walking the halls Heide had a plethora of Military information coursing through his brain. He hadn't been in this good of a mood since he left Midgar for his place of residence near north crater. His position as military advisor had him feeling younger than ever and his life was moving towards social again. There was so much new life in the company ( Read more... )

The company sometimes held open days for the purpose of public education - booths, balloons, posters and the like; pictorial displays of cleaner energy production, historical stories edited to be more suitable for younger minds. Joey, as a small child, had attended a few with her parents, always marveling at how different things were now compared to the Shinra she knew. How differently the WRO handled the people it served.

Today was her first time helping out with the... festivities, for lack of a better word. There were children around her knees, children everywhere - kids and teens similar to her own biological age. She was actually finding herself swept up in all the activity, answering their questions, handing out leaflets, chatting as if she were just another face in the crowd-

Until that voice interrupted her.

Joey had met quite a few people from her previous life by now, but the sound of their voices always seemed to pull something from her, some deeply buried anxiety she couldn't suppress. She could control her facial ( ... )

"Gyahahahaha, Like working. That is a good one Lass. No one likes working. Well, okay, I do. I like my job. Shi...Hel...French fries and ice cream I love my job! It's good to see you younglings at such an age looking forward to the future. Yer faces all bright and young. Yer look a little uh. Did i catch you off guard? I'm rightfully sorry if i did Little Miss." Heide stopped and tried to look as jovial as possible ( ... )

It was uncanny, the different facets of people. How many at Shinra had ever seen Heidegger...smile this way? There was grey in the big man's hair and beard now; Joey tried to calculate how old he must be. Fifties? Sixties? Grandfather age. Had he always been this... paternal?

A muscle twitched slightly at the side of her mouth - she was caught between the desire to run and the desire to laugh. Joey hesitated before taking the rose, feeling mildly nauseous. How strange this situation would be, if viewed by someone who knew her identity!

"Um. Thanks. It's very...pretty," she said, bringing the bloom to her nose and hiding a sigh behind it. "The previous Science Department of Shinra was headed by Professor Hojo, wasn't it? It's... in our history textbooks."

History. Joey remembered her repulsion for this man and didn't feel it to the same degree. "You worked for Shinra back then too, didn't you, sir? I think I recognise you. From the books, that is."

Heide was slightly shocked by the girl's knowledge. He hadn't expected her to know of Hojo or even himself. He pondered for a moment, considering a lie, but the text books would give him away. Everyone knew of Heidegger Pferdenlachen: Director of the Public Safety Maintenance Department and the top general of the Military ( ... )

Heide's right eye twitched as he gripped the roses in a vice like tightness. His gaze went blank as a twisted grimace replaced his grin. Too many years of booze induced rages, empty lust, misused power, and most of all regret flashed through his mind. From the rise to power through Jack's death and beyond the time of meteor he had strayed from long forgotten morals and been drunk on power. He heard the laugh of Jack echo through his mind followed by that of another. A familiar laugh from his past coming from a fresh young face that suddenly looked different ( ... )

Heide took a moment to collect his thoughts. His surprise was obvious on his face when he realized the girl looked like she was actually listening. He figured she would have wandered off or looked bored. No, she sat there peering at him over her glasses with what he though was an oddly amused look on her face. He continued this time less rambly ( ... )

A moment passed in silence after Heideggar's speech - for a speech it was, though jumbled and formless - as Joey stared at the man before her and attempted to organise her own thoughts.

Regretful. Repenting? What had time done to Shinra's merciless director of public affairs? She wondered briefly how old he was, and some quick mental calculations placed him at his late fifties - approximately the age she was, when her previous life met its physical end. Had this change come purely from the wisdom gained from age, or had the circumstances in his recent years been powerful enough to bring on all these reflections and epiphanies?

Different surroundings can shape people in unexpected ways - Joey herself was living proof of that very fact, but Joey's time had also been nonlinear. Had she been given a second chance while retaining her old body, would she have embraced it so completely as Heideggar appeared to have done ( ... )
