Old Disney vs. New Disney

Mar 25, 2009 03:29

This is actually a re-posting of my reply, in a thread over at MM-BBS. The topic was mostly in comparing the current generation of Disney shows and movies to the Disney shows and movies from "the olden days." Since I replied so late in the thread's lifespan, I didn't get any replies. That and, I suppose, some of my points had been brought up before ( Read more... )

I'd never heard about that analysis of Hellopro fans. That's pretty fascinating. And you wrote that all in under twenty minutes? =O Did you develop that speed or were you born with it?

Also, I think it's important to point out that much of the utter-crap pop media is simply forgotten. At the time, there were several Saved By The Bell lookalikes with even lower production value who were not worthy of our memories. We can't ignore those types of things now because they're still happening, but if we averaged those lost shows into the equation too I don't think there would be a significant quality difference between 'then' and 'now'.

California Dreams. hahaha, No thank you.

The New Class was even worse.

How do you have the memory for that?!

Well the writing itself took about twenty minutes. I didn't count the editing part, which may have almost doubled the time. As for the speed, part of it comes from my lifelong passion for writing. That and, in college, I was majoring in Journalism (taking the highest-level classes right off the bat). The intensity of some of those classes definitely aided in speed-writing. They would have us do assignments like 10,000 word essays, with only 15 words leeway, and give us only a couple nights to do them sometimes. ^_^;;

Although unfortunately, I was only able to complete one-and-a-half years of university. I had to drop out once the grants and scholarships stopped paying, that and because one of my parents passed away. -_- And in the eight years since I've left school, a lot of my skills have gotten sloppy. I find myself becoming more colloquial, and less precise, and time goes by. But I guess the core ability to "write long things in short amounts of time" just never goes away.

I am going sound cynical for just 1 second. Instead of lusting over Miley Cyrus in Hannah Montana, I should enjoy the show as is with it's colorful cast of characters?

It's not lusting for Miley Cyrus. As beautiful as I think she is, there are countless shows out there with girls that are much hotter (and of legal age). Hannah Montana is a genuinely good show, believe it or not. That was one of the shows that I would relate fairly closely to Saved By the Bell, if anything. A situation comedy, aimed at a family audience. With cute kids, wacky adults, and fairly simple humor. But in the end, both the acting and the writing were of fantastic quality. And in that, the show is enjoyable, so long as you take it simply for what it is ( ... )

I appreciate and agree with lots of this, it's especially true in California because Disney stuff is everywhere and where it'd be ideal growing up with all of it being nearby. I too have had people bitch at me for my likes although they'll still praise even mid-late 90's shows. Sometimes it's frustrating when you just think about how general the audiences are for these shows and it's not as if they're taking themselves seriously.

Also, why did they have to rip off Now or Never to make the Street Fighter IV English song or is it just me irritated by it.

This makes me think about my ventures with Hello Project. At first I was a little biased that the beginning groups were the better ones but as I grew older and my taste in music changed, I realized it wasn't really that they were better in the beginning, I was rather more open to the style at that point in time. Now I can barely stand anything popped and synthesized...but there are still some guilty pleasures. It is impossible to listen to "Chu~! Summer Party" without wanting to do the goofy dance and smile...or maybe it's just nostalgia...who knows ^_^

That's a very good point, and it relates to what I'm always saying about Hellopro music. People are always saying that the olden days stuff was vastly better, and they believe that Tsunku has lost his talent for writing or something. Whereas for me, I believe the quality of the compositions is still there (and that it always has been). There's never been a year of Hellopro that wasn't filled with amazing songs. I've been a fan of the stuff since it started, and my absolute favorite songs are spread out fairly well across that whole decade.

People just tend to feel attached to the era during which they joined the fandom. Anything that comes later will pale in comparison, even if only by a little bit. Losing the original faces doesn't help, either. Seeing their old favorites getting pushed aside, quitting, or getting fired... it only adds to this. In that sense, nostalgia becomes a double-edged sword. Their standards become incredibly low in terms of the old stuff, and way too high with regards to the new stuff.
