They seemed to have tried to achieve a mix of contrasting personalities. Diversity, etc.

Of course, this occasionally leads to deep suffering...

Deep suffering is one way to describe it. I was thinking more along the lines of 'eternal torment' myself but there really isn't that big a difference in the two phrases.

You'd think they'd have matched personalities to get a diversity that doesn't leave people miserable.
