summary: Kyuhyun was burned by flames when he was only a teenager; and now he has to bear the scars of his best friend's mistake forever.

White. White everywhere. He has white skin and white hair and oh-so-white eyes. The only colour on him is the harsh purple of the burn scars that cover his entire left face. The skin there is crusty, overlapping and peeling - he looks somewhat like a monster. A meek, misunderstood monster; but a monster, none the less. Pale lips are turned upwards into a small, cool smile; however his eyes shed clear tears that leave no marks against his cheeks.
He feels fingers interlace with in his own - warm, a protective grasp that he never wants to let go of. He can see the image of the boy he wanted - wants - to be; full cheeks, plump lips, wavy hair style the same as his own but with a rich brown colour. The boy's eyes are twinkling with happiness and words are coming out of those perfect lips. He can't understand the boy, though. He speaks in a weird tongue, words muffled to the pale boy's ears.

He does know one thing about the perfect boy, though. His name is Shim Changmin. He's the same age as Kyuhyun; born in the same month under the same stars in the same hospital and everything about him is the same. Except Changmin is free and isn't so white and monstrous. No - no, Changmin is an angel on earth with a big pearly eye-smile.

Changmin is a mysterious boy, floating his way around the institute like nobody can see him. He wears whatever Kyuhyun prefers, whether it's black that day or red or blue or any shade of colour that isn't white. Changmin knows that Kyuhyun hates that colour and he doesn't speak of it, mention it. Anyways - Changmin is mysterious and Kyuhyun often wonders where the coloured boy goes when he's not with Kyuhyun.

He transferred to the institute just after Kyuhyun lost his colour. He was there when the kids above him would throw stuff at him or try and steal his sheet music. He didn't stop them; but that was okay, because Kyuhyun didn't expect any one to try and stand up to Jiyung. Just the fact that Changmin was there fueled what little warmth was still in Kyuhyun.

Changmin taught Kyuhyun everything about life. He'd taught him about the kids down the street and how dirty they were (about how they would let other people put stuff inside of them and -) and that Kyuhyun's parents were liarsliarsliars that Kyuhyun was a good kid, a nice kid. He didn't just teach Kyuhyun about other people though. He taught Kyuhyun about himself. About how touching himself was good and how it didn't matter what other people thought of him because he was Kyuhyun. Flawless, flawless Kyuhyun, he'd speak to Kyuhyun with his eyes.

Yet Kyuhyun still looked at Changmin with stars in his eyes, because really, Changmin was the flawless one. He'd produce good grades when he didn't even go to class; he could sing; he had his colours and his liberty and his life.

They spent a lot of time together. Out on the swings of the back lot of the institute; drawing pictures mindlessly on the coarse rough grass - but still, they never talked. Kyuhyun wished Changmin could speak Korean.

But Kyuhyun knew another thing. He knew Changmin loved him dearly. More than his parents or his parent's parents or his doctor or anybody in his life who had said those words “I love you” to him. His parents nor his parent's parents nor his doctor had held him like Changmin had and kissed his tears away or -

None of them kissed him so softly, so daringly like Changmin; none of them caressed his face with just their fingertips; none of them cradled Kyuhyun's bodies with whispered “sorry”s as gently as Changmin; none of them touched his burn marks like Changmin.

Yes; you may say Kyuhyun worshipped the colour boy, that Changmin. Kyuhyun remembers the last time he had seen Changmin. The younger boy had climbed up his white bed (coming through his white door from the white hallway that was inside the white building -) with a cheeky grin on his face. He had wrapped his arms around Kyuhyun's neck, disregarding the terrible marks that ran down the left side of his neck, and rubbed his buttocks against Kyuhyun's crotch. To anybody else - like his terrible lying cheating ugly parents and his terrible lying cheating ugly ugly doctor - it would've been harassment. Though Kyuhyun knew Changmin was trying to cheer him up. When Changmin touched him it always felt good - when his mean doctor touched him it hurt, when his parents touched him it hurt, when fire touched him it hurt. Changmin made him feel good.

Changmin's macchiato tinged locks had brushed against the sensitive parts of Kyuhyun's jaw. He mouthed something in that odd language of his; mouth distorting slowly, slowly, taking over his body -

Then he was gone and Kyuhyun found himself back in a white bed in a white room. He looked around and frowned. There was lots of colour in this room, despite the bed and the walls. There was red on his sheets and on his arms and his thighs and his fingers - on his parents and on his doctor and there was also red on the handcuffs that were soon wrapped around his wrists.

When he walks outside for the first time after Changmin leaves there's so much colour that he doesn't know what to do without the other boy beside him. He reaches for the warmth the other boy usually gives gladly but it's not there, and Kyuhyun finds himself tugging on the red handcuffs in vain. He's pushed into a white truck and a man holds him in place as a woman with a shiny badge that says POLICE on it stares at him silently.

“Cho Kyuhyun, age sixteen. Burned outside of a bar in the slums at age fourteen. The only suspect - now sixteen year old Shim Changmin - Cho Kyuhyun's best friend - committed suicide three days later. Now a suspect in the murder case of Jung Yunho-sshi, Cho Jonghun-sshi, and Ahn Leekyung-sshi.”

Kyuhyun takes a deep breath and closes his eyes, praying silently for Changmin to come and save him. Changmin - his Changmin, the colour boy with the perfect lips and perfect smile - not this ugly terrible disgusting Shim Changmin that this ugly terrible disgusting lady talks about. He shakes uncontrollably, silently begging for Changmin to get here faster, sooner; because now the man is tying him down and the handcuffs are getting tighter and tighter, so tight that there's more red appearing on Kyuhyun's clear skin -

He opens his eyes and sees Changmin holding a knife out to him. He's floating again; the clear, airy sort of blade is floating too. Kyuhyun reaches up and grabs it out of his handcuffs and examines it carefully. It's white, too white and Kyuhyun wonders why Changmin is giving him something like this.

“Diagnosed with Residual Schizophrenia at age fourteen. Positive symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, and inability to use motor skills properly.”

He takes a deep breath and the image of Changmin flickers. Another breath and he's fading away in that weird sort of way that he always does - his mouth gets larger and larger and larger until it swallows him whole and then bye bye bye Changmin. Usually there would be some sort of see you next time but Kyuhyun feels sick, oh-so-sick in a way he hasn't felt in years. Lonely, angsty, depressed; because the words bye bye bye had been mouthed back to him by Changmin.

The boy who never was.
