Personality: James appears lighthearted, yet is generally fairly serious. It really just depends on how well you know him if he appears serious or lighthearted. With friends and family he tends to cut loose, sometimes acting very silly indeed. If he doesn’t know you his sense of humor is much more muted or snarky, if you tick him off or annoy him it can get cutting or just plain nasty, Overall though he can act like a smart-ass, using his quick wit and liberal sense of humor to get a laugh out of nearly anyone.
Using his humor to diffuse and test situations, James is able to read people, make calculated choices and then make everyone comfortable with him. He exudes an easy charm, making him appear a people person. Nature however makes him slow to trust, while making him friendly, thus is slightly confusing. However once you have earned his trust he is a very loyal friend and will betray your trust in him for nothing at all. Even if you threaten himself or someone else he is close to he will never break a trust. However, if you break James’ trust in you, unless it’s for his own good and he realizes this, he will not be happy with you and will never trust you with something so important as his personal thoughts or weaknesses again.
If you appear to be younger than James and become a friend, he will most likely end up viewing you as a surrogate younger sibling, even if you’re only a year younger. It’ll take some serious talking to him and maybe beating it into his head to avoid that possibility, and even then it won’t always stick. This does have some good news, as it means that if you are hurt by someone he will go all over-protective-big-brother on you and take care of whoever hurt you. He does know martial arts, so he can kick some ass if he feels the need.
If you appear to be older or the same age as James, he’ll treat you as a friend and peer. He doesn’t look up to people easily, so that’s the best you’re going to get out of him.
Of course, even if you can prove you can protect yourself, if you become like family to him, be you older or younger, he will do his damnedest to protect you. This can be a bit overwhelming; James means well, but he can be overbearing.
James does not allow negative emotions to show on his face. Positive emotions are allowed free reign, but if he becomes worried, upset, or angry, those expressions won’t show up in public. Only two people are able to make him visible worried, one is Juke, and the other is Thomas, his best friend since forever and son respectively.
James face doesn’t ‘shut-down’, as some peoples do, if these powerful negative emotions appear; instead he allows his face to remain lighthearted. If the situation is one you know makes him upset or mad and you see him smiling and laughing more, this is not a good sign. The longer he is in this fake-genial mode, the more powerful his destructive fit will be if he is mad, the longer his depression if he is upset, and the more spectacular is mother henning fit if he was worried.
If you triggered his fake-genial mode by hurting someone he cares about, be prepared for a grudge that lasts forever and him doing his level best to take you down in some way or another.
A good sense of logic, rational thinking and details allow him to be good at his job, make serious decisions, and handle the human factor in most situations. James is not a natural diplomat, but managed to pick up a rough gem of the skill while a detective, and further refined it while being an Intergalactic Traveling Alien Forensic Pathologist. That’s not to say he blundered about in an undiplomatic fashion before he became a detective. He was able to handle small personal matter in a very diplomatic way beforehand, (the skill comes from having a short-tempered, martial arts loving, high-heeled wearing, with a mean over-hand throw baby sister), but if he thought you were being stupid, or your idea was stupid he never failed to say so. That got him punched quite a bit. Sometimes he still gets punched, especially if he forgets to be diplomatic, but not as often. James has managed to avoid some of those more dangerous landmines thanks to his learned diplomatic skill, this has saved his life more times than he can count.
He is also very nosy, and tends to poke his nose into things which really aren’t his business. These things tend to work out okay, and his advice is normally very good and sound, but it can be very annoying. It takes a blunt reminder that it is NONE of his business for James to sheepishly withdraw his nosy nose and retreat. Yet still he’ll return to give unwanted advice. Just smack him with a slipper if it gets too bad.
James easily adapts to new situations, and it takes a lot to surprise him. This is a relatively newly discovered skill to James, but one he must have always had, considering how he took some of his and Juke crazy adventure in stride. But traveling the universe has allowed this skill to truly bloom, what with all the random kidnappings and trans-locating he has gone through as a widely heard of, truly neutral, Alien Forensic Pathologist. After the first six of seven times of arriving randomly on a new world, most of them not human-compatible, some of them coming with bodily modifications, and a few with outright violence towards his person, James started to write down his experiences. After an ill-timed adventure on a planet with an insane magnetic field which scrambled his electronic journal he switched to a heavy duty, heat-resistant, water proof paper-esque notebook and kept his notes in there. He’s gone through three and a half of those two-hundred paged notebooks in the past four years, with an average of one page per experience, double-sided. That’s a grand total of about three-hundred different abduction experiences, not including the first three years which were lost. It takes a LOT to surprise James about a situation, or place after all that experience.
A cynic at heart James still gives people the benefit of the doubt and will judge them more than his first impression. However working in such a tense environments and dealing with the worse aspect of human and alien nature on a daily basis has given James plenty of reasons to never doubt with first impressions of everyone he meets. But James makes a point of not acting upon this first impression when dealing with people because he knows that’s not what his parents would have wanted him to do.
His parents are a driving force in how James deals with people. They were very generous and always thought the best of people. His younger brother Sam is like that naturally, but James and their little sister Margret need to actively work at it. James has far more success at it than Margret, who tends to react with violence and enough cutting sarcasm to dice a person self esteem into micro pieces.
No one is all goodness and light, and James is a definite example of that. He is human and thus is flawed. His two greatest flaws are his inability to drop a grudge, and a tendency towards obsessive behavior. If you actually manage to piss of James (best done by hurting his family and friends on purpose) he will hold a grudge and he will pursue revenge. When he was young he never really hated anyone, it wasn’t until his parents murder that James first really tasted hate. It was powerful and gave him drive. It was also terribly self-destructive. Such a late yet strong hate managed to warp that part of his personality that carries anger. It made it so that he can never really let anything that pisses him off go. However, James is also able to recognize when someone hurts by mistake, and those small grudges he can let go of. It is the deliberate hurting of anyone that really pisses him off.
His tendency towards obsessive behavior he’s had all of his life, unlike his hate. James doesn’t obsess about people, which is a good thing; instead he tends to obsessively focus on things and ideas. Whereas Juke would give up on a clever plan for mischief as a child if he couldn’t figure out how it would work successfully, James would worry at it like a dog with a bone until he could figure it out. Sometimes this ended in disaster, but they were simple childish fun. When Juke first found out about his heart condition James was devastated and that’s what started his interest in medicine. Cardiovascular medicine and neurology became his obsession in medicine and he knew more about those two particular fields by the end of his first year in college than some fourth year medical students did. He also became obsessive after his parents death, and feverishly studied forensics, and detective work to catch whoever sabotaged his parent’s car. He was ultimately unsuccessful, but stuck with his change in career’s though he did study medicine on his off time. James in a state of obsessive concentration forgets to take care of himself, this has lead to Juke and his siblings to finding him in the middle of an epileptic seizure far more often than comfortable.
James often disregards his epilepsy beyond taking his anti-convulsion medicine, which is dangerous. Other known triggers for his epileptic attacks, besides missing doses of medicine, are lack of sleep, missing meals, and stress. When focused James will forget to eat and sleep, and tends to stress out. So an obsessive James nearly always needs a keeper, or he runs the risk of causing serious or permanent damage to his body or brain.
