Not very often... but every once and awhile I'll read about some new thing (be it a game, a convention, or some sort of service) that at some point previous to its unveiling I had some moment where I thought 'Hey, this might be a money-making scheme ( Read more... )

Couple of things here. First off, one possibility would be that you could run the DSP client-side and send the data to the server which would then verify it against a state machine to determine whether the input is valid for the state the player is in and discard it if it isn't. It'd still be more expensive than just blindly accepting input but would be less painful than doing on-the-fly DSP for multiple sources. I have no idea how well you could get something like that to scale, but it at least seems like it might be workable in some fashion ( ... )
