Why are people so messed up?

I'm sure everyone has heard of the Austrian man who imprisoned his daughter in a room / cell in the basement of their house for 24 years, where he raped her repeatedly, fathered seven children, and let one of them die by not taking it for medical treatment. I just read this news story about his sentencing, and this bit jumped out at me:

I think I read that he just got a life sentence, but he's not going to live long enough for that to have the meaning it should. It's truly unimaginable.
