But what happened to these biological parents so that she had to be adopted? Or will that be revealed in later chapters?

Her family (including her parents) wanted a boy, but was disappointed when their baby turned out to be a girl. So they cared for her until they thought she was old enough to be put up for adoption which was when she was five
