A Tribute, Part 1 of 3

Dec 21, 2007 15:24

It has come to my attention that I have slowly undergone a fandom shift. Kind of like a paradigm shift but not. See, my first fandom was Buffy and then I fell into Harry Potter for a very long time with occasional forays into Smallville. But over the past couple of months, my focus has shifted from hell demons and psychopaths with delusions of grandeur and the ambiguous morality of superpeople to RPS fandoms, with their everyday stories and everyday people (okay, not really, but kind of in a relative sort of way). Who knows, maybe next I'll actually starting living? Anyway, I've decided to make a sort of shrine to my 3 RPS fandoms in chronological order.

So first up is popslash of the *NSYNC variety, which in many ways still embodies everything I look for in a fandom and is my measuring stick for RPS:

Note: this is no way a primer or pimp post--mostly because I'm lazy--but it is still a tribute, so expect pictures, vids, and random fic recs under the cut but for a more detailed account of fandom try here or here

And now for the good stuff:

SECTION I: the boys, the pictures, and the slash

The eldest of the bunch is Chris Kirkpatrick, who's got the most gorgeous falsetto I have ever, ever, ever heard. Ever.

From what I've gathered, Chris had a hard life, single working mom, lots of siblings, they lived in their car for a while. It was a hard knock life, but then Lou Perlman found him and Chris found the other four boys and then things seemed okay until they realized what a total scum/sleaze/douche bag Lou was and sued his ass. Then things got better, then *NSYNC broke up, and Chris was/is on his lonesome. Chris is hypoglycemic but he's usually written as using humor and whackiness as a front for his soft, messed up marshmallowy center.

Be Your Own Best Friend by Betty Plotnick (Chris/Lance), one of my favorite fanfics EVER. There are no words to describe the epic-ness or the beauty or the honesty of this fic. The end, especially, kills me every time, silly messed-up boys...just NO WORDS. READ THIS.
Ultraviolent by Lucy Hale (JC/Chris), superlong fic that chronicles Chris' entire life, pretty much. Lucy Hale has a penchant for writing angsty, messed up Chris and I think this is one of her best forays into that area.
Thirteen Years and Counting by Pen (Chris/Lance), a wonderful post-*NSYNC fic where the boys try it all again.
Fragile by Julad (Chris/Lance), another one of my very favorite fics. Basically Chris decides he's in love with Lance, but Lance refuses to give it a try because he doesn't want to have bad sex with Chris. A crackish plot that turns into something really beautiful and soft.
The Bar by Lucy Hale (Chris/Justin), an AU where Chris owns a bar. A quiet story where Chris mostly watches everyone else, but then all of a sudden Justin appears and Chris comes back to the forefront.

When I'm inclined to pick favorites, I usually settle on this boy: JC Chasez, who was one of *NSYNC's two main vocals and, imo, kicks JT's vocal butt and can harmonize like whoa. I am very eagerly awaiting his second album.

JC, I think, was adopted but I don't think I've ever seen any stories with this particular brand of angst so it's pretty much a non-issue. He was a Mousketeer, kind of funny looking as a kid, and grew up into this quietly confident, goofy man who uses his big smile and rather flamboyant side to disguise his more serious, stubborn side. He's also portrayed to be a little sex-obsessed (look at the songs he wrote for *NSYNC and 90% of the songs off his Schizophrenic album) and a little clueless and a lot in love with sleeping and napping and cuddling. I also forgive this boy a lot of fashion faux pas, from feathers to fur to the dreaded chin stripe.

A Hell of a Yarn by SarahQ (AJ/JC), is the perfect little comfort fic. Sweet, hot, and just a wonderful AU about two guys who dig each other.
Love and Other Miscommunications by Deirdre (AJ/JC), shares many qualities with the fic, sweet, hot, and another wonderful AU about two guys who dig each other. :)
Last Past the Morning by Topaz (JC/Lance), a fic that deals with a recurring characterization of JC, clueless and a little bit jaded about love. It's a fic that hurts but in all the right places.
Sweetness, Light by Synchronik (JC/Lance), and in a variation of the above theme there's also clueless JC who cuddles and flirts with everybody too much which can be confusing for the poor fool who finds himself in love with the boy.
In the Heart, a Little House by silveryscrape (Justin/JC), a fun little AU where Justin's a dancer who needs to go to yoga and there he meets JC. I love this characterization of JC, btw, and Justin's pretty awesome here too.

Even though I've never been able to do the slash thing with this boy (he's married! with kids!), I still love him a lot: Joey Fatone, who's gone off and done broadway and movie things and was totally, totally underrated as a singer. Seriously, *NSYNC should have put this boy on more leads because his voice is AMAZING.

Even though Joey's in the middle of this group, he's usually painted as the sane one. I mean, he obviously had some kind of issue going on because of his whole committment/marriage/kids thing but Joey is seriously like a fount of everlasting love and patience and otherwise having his shit together. Everybody loves Joey. Get with it.

Best Laid Plans by Lucy Hale (gen), a sort of high school AU where Joey's the new kid at school and decides to take the Breakfast Club route and make a singing group of the outcast, the nerd, the jock, and the shy singer.
...and that's all the fic I've got for Joey. I mean, the man is awesome I just cannot slash him. But you can usually rely on him to be awesome and supportive but takes no BS throughout all popslash fics.

This boy came out while I was in Taiwan last, last summer and it made me totally estatic: Lance Bass, who's the bass and always seemed embarrassed to sing solo. :(

Lance was always the quiet, awkward one who looked funny and had crazy eyes. But we all know that's a front for calculating, bitchy Lance who's got his own issues of self-worth and falling for the wrong guys. Lance is quite possibly my favorite guy to read in fic, or maybe that dubious honor goes to Chris or maybe that's probably why I love Chris/Lance.

Beyond Reproach by Lily (Chris/Lance), one of the first popslash fics I ever read but it's definitely stuck with me. It's just a simple college AU story where Lance struggles to reconcile his ordered, planned, and religious life with this painter guy named Chris.
The Long Run by Tiffany Rawlins (Chris/Lance), another post-*NSYNC fic that somehow manages to blend this mundane softness with a very fraught and looming sense of history.
Now or Never by Slim and Without Me (Lance/Nick), crossover fic with the Backstreet Boys that's basically about trying to make an old relationship work, remembering the good stuff and trying not to fall into the same mess as the last time.
The Wedding Cake Theory by no pseud attached (JC/Lance), a great fic about falling in love and coming out. Ironically (or maybe not so much), Lance is usually depicted as having a really hard time coming out since he's from Mississippi and pretty religious and all that jazz. This is a really great fic about that struggle.
So, This by Synchronik (JC/Lance), Synchronik is one of my very favorite authors and wrote the very first MCR fic I ever read (but more on that in Part 3). This is an awesome AU where Lance is a hooker and JC's his clueless john. And who doesn't love hooker!fic??

And in case you're really living in a hole, this is Justin Timberlake, the most famous and most successful of our post-*NSYNCers, but whose voice has always seemed the weakest to me. But I still love me some JT!

In fic, Justin comes across as the spoiled little boy who's got a heart of gold in spite of himself. The boy's probably got a whole can of issues that comes from being thrust in the spotlight at far too an early age. Justin is usually either the determined pursuer or the oblivious object of affection.

Too Many People Out of Love by Sandy (Justin/Lance), is technically an AU but the boys are still in the music industry. It's also basically another hooker!fic but without the whole Pretty Woman cliche, kind of. Whatever, it's a good fic that meanders and weaves a really interesting story.
Out and About by Sandy (Justin/Lance), this fic hits a lot of my fic-kinks. Sandy is like the queen of Justin/Lance with a very specific take on them and this is one of my favorite fics of her. Basically, Lance decides to come out, Justin wants to too, so the PR people spin the story so that Lance and Justin are some true-love couple and they basically fake their way until they make it. I have a lot a lot a lot of love for this fic.
Canadia by V (Chris/Justin), also called hoser!sync. It's an AU where the boys are Canadian, Justin's a hockey player and he's a little bit in love with his sister's boyfriend, Chris. Really good.
ManDate by Deirdre (Justin/JC), a fun little AU where Chris tricks JC into appearing on his dating game show. Fluffy and sweet, with bonus hot Chris/Lance voyeur sex at the beginning.
Used by Chris J (AJ/Justin), another crossover with BSB and this one is high-quality. There's a very nice slow build-up of friendship, and viewing Justin through AJ's eyes gives us a really nice take on his character.

The *NSYNC brand of popslash is one of those fandoms with crazy, crazy pairing names. I don't really use them but a lot of people do, so for future reference's sake, here they are:
Chris/JC = TrickC
Chris/Joey = Choey
Chris/Lance = Trickyfish
Chris/Justin = Timbertrick
JC/Joey = JoC (I think)
JC/Lance = Bassez
JC/Justin = JuC
Joey/Lance = JoLa
Joey/Justin = Timbertone
Lance/Justin = lambs

SECTION II: the music, the vids, and the links

The boys made three albums, and I have an insane amount of fondness for all of them:
*NSYNC, their debut album with highlights like I Drive Myself Crazy, Everything I Own, and Sailing.

No Strings Attached, their Lou-free album whose highlights include Just Got Paid, Space Cowboy, and I Thought She Knew.

And Celebrity, their final album with stand-outs like The Two of Us, Up Against the Wall, and Do Your Thing.

Then they went their separate ways:
Justified, Justin's first solo album that I ruined by over-listening (even though it admittedly suffered from some not-so-great lyrics), but when I did listen to it I thoroughly enjoyed Senorita and Rock Your Body.

Schizophrenic, JC's first solo album which I adore, adore, adore thanks to songs like 100 Ways, All Day Long I Dream About Sex, Come to Me, Dear Goodbye...and every other song.

FutureSex/LoveSounds, Justin's second album that is awesome but I can't share any songs because they're iTunes protected. :(

The tentatively titled Kate, JC's second album which should hopefully be dropping soon because he finally broke up with his record label and found an indie one and I love, love, love, love, love times infinity this song: You Ruined Me. Until Yesterday is equally rocking, but I haven't managed to find that one aside from buying it off of iTunes and no thanks *kicks protection* so just watch this rather well-done fan-made music video. Both have classic JC lyrics like "trapped inside your heart-shaped box" and "but if you play with fire then you'll get burned, when will you learn" and etc. ♥ JC

SECTION III: random vids

Performance stuff:
I Thought She Knew [LINK]: one of my favorite a cappella vids EVER. I mean, they look pretty nervous but still amazing and mind-blowing. You can hear Lance's bass line (especially at 2:09) and every one else gets a solo. LISTEN TO JOEY AT 1:25, HE IS MADE OF WIN, CLEARLY.

Medley with Tim McGraw [LINK]: I am indifferent to Tim McGraw, but I enjoy this performance because JC harmonizes beautifully (2:18) and Joey and Chris do solos (2:54 and 3:12, respectively) and SO DOES LANCE (5:58)!! He looks adorably embarrassed when his starts, but his low purr is amazing.

What's Going On [LINK]: so this is only JC and Justin, really, but listen to the boys sing! Crazy good, yo. Also, on a more shallow note, check JC's arms!

I Drive Myself Crazy [LINK]: one of their first music videos, but omg, Chris' voice is so high and so clear and just freaking amazing. Also amazing? Chris' hair, Justin's "acting" and JC's little ballet move at 1:53. Plus BABY NSYNC!

Looking back on their first performance on MTV [LINK]: MORE BABY NSYNC!! plus priceless comments like "JC: pineapple head. Chris: shut it." and "Justin: we're acrobats too!" and laughing at Joey's face. (from "Road to Celebrity")

That's the Way Love Goes [LINK]: hot arrangement, hot video, hot boys...there's absolutely nothing wrong with this.

Interview stuff:
JC and Justin have new hair [LINK]: "Man, I'm tired of looking at your head like that--do something" and in JC's funny little voice. And could the boy be any gayer in this clip? No, I don't think that's physically possible. Also love Justin worrying about having an alien head. (from "The Rosie O'Donnell Show" in 2001)

What would you change about yourself? [LINK]: their answers reveal so much about their personalities--Lance's is practical, Joey's is off-the-cuff, Justin's is nitpicky and something you can tell he's definitely thought about (which is funny because Lance is the one who got a nose job, not him), JC's is genuine and sincere, and Chris' turns into a joke. (from "The Rosie O'Donnell Show" in 2000)

What was your first concert? [LINK]: JC's not-quite shame for the MC Hammer concert! Plus a bit of Chris/Justin mindmeld at the end: "Next week!" (from "The Rosie O'Donnell Show" in 2000)

What Timbertrick is usually made of [LINK]: Chris is the oldest, Justin's the youngest, but whatever. KIDS AT HEART. (from "The Making of...Pop")

But here's the other side of Timbertrick [LINK]: seriously deadly eye lasers from Justin and Chris teling him to stop while the other boys continue with the interview.

Justin and JC dancing in their pajamas [LINK]: complete and utter goofs, the pair of them.

And...the end. Feel free kick me if any links don't work or whatever because I've been working on this piece by piece for the past two weeks or so.

Also, want more slash? Try my popslash tag.

So Part 3 is in the works. Part 2 is, uh, not at all because I figured it'd mostly be picspam, but whatever. Hopefully, I'll have it up before Christmas. And because I'm lame and didn't do the whole Christmas card thing, maybe you all can take this as my gift to you this holiday season, mkay?

picspam, vidspam, popslash, my tribute to rpf, music, fic rec
