This Elena is the one that will grow into the Elena in shadows and light. She's on her way there simply by accepting that she needs Damon in her life and that it's okay that it's just sex (although, it's never just sex) because they'll figure it out. Not everything needs to be defined and labeled all of the time ( ... )

Exactly! Especially when you're an overly hormonal newly-turned amplified vampire girl with complicated feels.
I read in a fic once - and I can't for the life of me remember where and maybe I read it more than once - that after Elena became a vampire, Damon relaxed. He loved her just as much, wanted her as badly as ever, but he wasn't so manic about it because he had forever.
If you ever remember that fic, point me to it please because that sounds really good. :)
He and Elena are finally on an even playing field here and he's finally able to really be what she needs.

You have both of their characterizations down pat (and you know I'm a total snob about that). Everything they said and did felt exactly in character for them.
Onto the particularly brilliant lines:
Elena, he thought, his brain supplying him with information his body already knew.
This is so eloquent and sweet and speaks to the connection he has with her <3
He wondered, somewhat fuzzily, if her clothes were strewn about his room or if she’d left them in a somewhat tidy pile beside the bed.
So adorable that even partially drunk and not fully awake, Damon is still a neat-freak :P
Elena nuzzled the tip of her cold nose against his shoulder.

Both Elena and Damon giving the same warning and having them both react so strongly was incredibly, er, arousing.
