Summary: Sanji takes a bullet for Nami and Zoro gets pissed.

“What the HELL is wrong with you?!”
Chopper shrieked in fright, jumping as the door to the infirmary burst open and Zoro’s anger flooded the room. Sanji calmly looked up from where he was reclined on the bed, bandage tightly wrapped around his right shoulder.

“Keep your voice down, marimo,” he said. “I’m resting.”

“You stupid shit!” Zoro growled, stomping into the room and kicking aside the cook’s blood-drenched shirt. “What were you thinking, taking a bullet like that?!”

Chopper flailed wildly, making shushing noises, but was ignored. Sanji regarded the swordsman with a cool look.

“I was protecting Nami-san.”

Zoro continued toward the bed, stepping past the wide-eyed reindeer, black bandana still tied to his head and looking for all the world like the demon he was known as.

“I told you I would get to her on time-”

“You were moving too slowly.”

“Bull! You weren’t even hearing me! You were just trying to be the damn hero!” Paying no attention to the now exasperated doctor, Zoro’s arms surged out, hands clamping down hard on the cook’s shoulder. “You could’ve died, you idiot!”

“I still might if you don’t let go of my fucking shoulder!”

Zoro’s hands released him like he was on fire. Chopper, now in human form, hustled the suddenly sedate swordsman out of the infirmary, closing the door behind him with a sigh of relief.

“I’m sorry.”

Sanji opened his eyes and gave them a moment to adjust to the darkness of the room before turning them on Zoro, who stood in front of the door. His posture was sullen, maybe even a little restrained, and Sanji wondered if Chopper had read him the riot act after his little hissy fit.

“It’s okay.” Sanji watched him carefully, uncertain. The swordsman’s voice had a tell-tale hoarseness to it and Sanji wasn’t sure he liked that. “I’m all right, you know.”

“I know. I just-” He stopped suddenly and shifted, as if he wanted to move forward, but wasn’t sure he could.

“Zoro?”

“I wish you hadn’t. I think it was a stupid, pointless thing to do.”

Sanji frowned slightly for a moment, considered, and then said, “I’d do it for you, too.”

“That isn’t the point,” Zoro said, sounding faintly annoyed.

“I know. But I would.”

Neither of them spoke for a while. Sanji was tired and his shoulder hurt and he was about to doze off when he heard Zoro take a single step closer.

“I would, too.”

“Well,” Sanji said, forcing his eyes open because he knew this was one of those Important Moments in life, “that seems stupid and pointless.”

“Yeah.”

Sanji waited, but Zoro didn’t continue and didn’t come any closer. Instead he turned and opened the door and the moonlight spilled in when he said, “Get some rest.” And then he left and Sanji managed a smile before he fell asleep.
