Walking into the Floating Fish that day reminded Zoro of those moments in Westerns, where the bad guy walks into a saloon and everything suddenly goes tense as everybody stops what they’re doing to look at him. Though, really, it wasn’t exactly fair to call him the bad guy in this situation, but he couldn’t go into this with that kind of attitude. He had to show that he could be a sensitive guy when he wanted to be.
It was obviously a slow day for the restaurant. Gin, whose bruises were healing, was reclining in one of the booths, looking up from spinning the salt and pepper shakers; and Zoro could see Zeff eyeing him from the kitchen. Sanji was behind the counter, leafing through a TV Guide. He lifted his eyes when Zoro walked in, but wouldn’t meet his stare, clearing his throat quietly.
“Hey.” Zoro closed the door behind him and approached the counter slowly, like he was heading for a duel to the death. “How’re you doing, man?” He asked, nodding to Gin.
“Been better,” Gin laughed wryly. “Been worse. You know how it is.”
“Yeah.” Zoro nodded again, turning his head to face Sanji when he reached the counter. The other man’s eyes met his then, and Zoro’s heart did a weird little trip that only Sanji could make it do. He put his palms down on the countertop and leaned in slightly, lowering his voice (Gin and Zeff watching his every move made him feel nervous). “Look, I’m really sorry for what Don did. He’s an asshole. But not all cops are assholes.”
“I know, Zoro.” Sanji sighed, rubbing awkwardly at his neck. “I’m sorry, too,” he added after a moment. “I was just-”
“I know,” Zoro said. “It’s cool.”
Sanji smiled slightly, teasing, “Cool.”
Zoro smiled back, eyes narrowed playfully at Sanji’s mocking. He didn’t care if the guy made fun of him, as long as they were all right again.
“Aw, that’s nice,” Gin cooed from the booth. “Now all you’ve gotta do is kiss and make up.”
At that moment, nothing in the world sounded better to Zoro. He wasn’t completely certain that the thought of kissing Sanji hadn’t occurred to him before; maybe it had, it’d just never been brought to his attention like now. And it sounded like a good idea, this kissing business.
He hadn’t realizing he’d been leaning over the counter until Sanji burst out laughing. Gin hooted, slapping his hand on the table in mirth, and puckered his lips mockingly. Even Zeff chuckled from his place in the kitchen.
And Zoro, face and neck flushed with embarrassment, told them all to shut up or he’d arrest them.
They just laughed harder.
