B&H photo videos usually will do some sweet bundle deals like this one:

This one is just under $1300. Of course your friend can also go a little cheaper by going with a Rebel XTi. This one model offers the best all around features for a casual to experienced photographer.

They should just pay me to take the pictures, I'll do it for a thousand! Or less, really. I'm cheap.

Oh, I checked and I'm totally off work that weekend. I'm available, pick me, pick me! And I'm professional--my day job is in an actual studio, and I freelance events on the side. He wouldn't have to deal with having to outfit a camera, learn how to use it, all that crap!

If they have never shot with an SLR their best option is to go to a local camera shop and take a look at some of their SLR's. It's not only the camera they have to think about, they will also need to take into consideration getting Lenses and everything else they will need, cleaning cloths, UV filters, Camera bag (I recommend the lowepro slingshot (it's the camera bag I carry everywhere) But honestly, just hire alice :)
