Here are six new “shirebunnies”, plus three donated bunnies! There are absolutely no strings or restrictions on “shirebunnies”. It's all right to change them completely, use different characters, any genre, any rating... they're simply offered in the hopes of inspiring ideas.

1. In FOTR Bilbo says to Frodo, “But I thought you knew enough Elvish at least to know dûn-adan: Man of the West, Númenorean. But this not the time for lessons!” Just what were Frodo’s lessons like? What were Bilbo’s teaching methods? Did Frodo even want to learn Elvish, or have lessons when he came to live at Bag End? Could he have been inspired to "go back to school" upon seeing Sam's joy in learning? Or was it an organic process, Bilbo teaching Frodo new things as he thought of them, as they hiked and lived together?
2. In Rivendell Bilbo says to Frodo, “It is difficult to keep awake here, until you get used to it.” What was it like for Bilbo when he first began living in Rivendell? What did the various residents of Rivendell think of him?
3. Frodo and Gimli were both quite taken with the Lady Galadriel, each in their own way. Did they ever talk together about her?
4. In Lórien, we learn that the only hobbit who claimed to know how to handle boats is Merry. Sam was uncomfortable in them, and Frodo had other things on his mind... but what of Pippin? Was that long journey down the Great River interesting to him, or tedious? Did he learn anything about boats, voluntarily or otherwise? If so, who taught him?
5. Frodo, Sam, and Pippin recovered at Cormallen from late March to early April; surely the springtime weather in Ithilien wasn't blissfully perfect every day. Perhaps there was a day or two of rain, wind, colder-than-usual air... what was done to ensure that the hobbit heroes were kept warm, dry, and comfortable?
6. It's obvious from many passages in the books that Gimli is quite devoted to his hobbit friends. What is he thinking about when Aragorn honors Frodo and Sam at Cormallen (or in the movie, all four of the hobbits at Minas Tirith)? Does he try to hide his feelings, or is he quite open about them?

1. Sam's waking coincided with the time of his birthday (waking was April 8th; his birthday is said to be April 6th). Were the hobbits cognizant of this and did they do anything special for him?
2. Reading Appendix B: Tale of Years, and looking at the later years regarding the Fellowship, makes me reflect on the year that Rosie died and Sam departs from Middle-earth. Little time elapsed between Rosie dying and Sam making the ultimate decision to follow Frodo (Rosie dies on Mid-year's Day and Sam leaves on September 22). Could Sam not find peace in Middle-earth anymore? No comfort with his 13 children? Did Merry and Pippin hinder/have any thoughts about his leaving? And although Sam may have been reunited with Frodo, what of the people he loved in the Shire that he left behind?

slightlytookish:
1. At Cormallen, or in Minas Tirith, Frodo discovers one effect of the Ring's destruction - a grey hair (or hairs) sprouting up on his head. After so many years of Frodo being "well-preserved" by the Ring, compounded by what he went through to destroy it, it seems likely that the aging process would at last show up in him at least a bit. (Could be comedic or angsty.)
