Izzie smirked at the letters as Denny laid them down on the Scrabble board. “That’s two words,” she said.
“Guess I lose then.” He smiled his charming smile, dimples showing prominently.
“Is that your way of telling me you’re tired of playing?”
“No, it’s my way of telling you I want to kiss you right now,” he answered in his trademark baritone voice.
“Well, we’ve already had a first kiss,” Izzie pointed out, not sure why she was arguing the point.
“I don’t think that one should count,” Denny answered. “I was fresh out of surgery so I couldn’t give it a hundred percent effort. I think we should try it again.”
“You do, do you?” Izzie asked, a hint of nervousness in her laughter.
“So how ‘bout you come over here?” Denny gestured for her to sit next to him.
Izzie approached the side of his hospital bed, butterflies in her stomach. Something about Denny always gave her butterflies. He made her feel like no one ever had before.
She sat down and faced him; he reached out a hand to cup her face, gently nudging her forward. She complied, and ever-so-softly, their lips met. Izzie could feel her stomach drop, and she parted her lips slightly, allowing the kiss to deepen. The hospital around them faded away as she soaked in every aspect of his kiss - the slight tickle of his afternoon stubble against her chin, the velvety smoothness of his tongue, the feel of his fingers in her hair.
She didn’t open her eyes right away when they parted, wanting to forget for a few seconds where they were. “Well?” Denny finally asked. She could practically hear the smile on his face.
Izzie opened her eyes. “It was the best second first kiss I’ve ever had.”
