They've done that in this area for years and years. It does kind of suck. I can see it done in a consentual way, maybe with regular ed kids, too for community service, but not like that.
What drives me crazy is that they let a lot of the really bad troublemakers and/or school skippers do that in my current school, just to give them something to do, I guess. But they don't clean -- they're just running around like crazy with a broom. Annoying!
what bothers me, when I get to thinking about it, is that there aren't businesses in the community who are willing to employ the students. If I understand the program right, the kids are working for free to obtain job skills, right? So why not bring in a few students to, say, bus tables for a B'ville diner shift once a week, and get an assload of good publicity in the process.
Heck, even places like the local library or the town parks department or such could use help with things like coallating, stapling, stamping. The office building where I used to work employs people who seem to do nothing but water the plants.
I guess it just stuns me that the local community isn't interested. On some level, I can see it, but this is one of those things where when it's well implemented, everyone wins.
I certainly agree, a lot of businesses aren't willing to hire disabled students. My brother now works for Meals on Wheels, and also does some side work on the jobs. It's difficult for him to find a position anywhere, especially in a small community which is close minded about individuals with disabilities. These kids deserve a chance too, they didn't choose to be born with a disability.
