This is ridiculous - how the hell are my characters meant to interact with others in such a situation?

Because Utah is a notoriously easy target the missionaries have a lot of spare time on their hands. This allows them to interact more than they usually do. They arrange activity dates between their selves and the mission leaders arrange things for them. They can meet at church activities or random social events within the city. They can even meet on their weekly shop (all missionaries have the some one day out of the week to do thei grocery shopping). They can meet outside of the church, in the park on a short walk to 'ponder and reflect'. Chapel clean-up. Car washing. Baptisms for the dead (white temple garb goes see-through when wet, ahem.) Maybe they're doing a good deed? Have them shovelling snow together, getting hot and sweaty.

And how about the non-members and the missionaries? The possibilites are endless!

Door knocking, chores, walk up to them on the street. Maybe after the first meeting a phone number can be given for 'future contact' (all missionaries have mobile phones, too). Have them call eachother, meet up maybe alone because a companion's away. Start a chat and have you and your companion knocking on some poor soul's door. Inject some drama so it's not the usual educational monotony.

And the non-members and the non-members? Pffffft. Just treat it like the usual! There's a whole city for them to explore.

Can my missionary be out and out gay? Why not?

Because if they were flamboyantly gay they wouldn't have been allowed on a mission, quite simply. Have them a bit quiet, a bit tortured... or maybe just utterly straight and having panic attacks at the advances of others. It all boils down to logical creativity.

I can't play a missionary. They're boring.

For a start - remember that missionaries are just young teens. That's all. A mission doesn't automatically make them spectacularly holy. They're are teens, with teenage thoughts, teenage emotions. They're just alone and scared and tortured! Work with it! They don't HAVE to discuss church all day every day. In fact, a prized missionary technique is to build up a friendship with a non-member before carefully inviting them to church.
