thoughts need to stop running rampant.

a few months back, we had to write using the style of Sandra Cisneros, who wrote The House on Mango Street. we were all reading each other’s vignettes, similarly themed to the ones in the book; dadabhoy had us review each other’s to make sure we were on track, and the comments i got back were mostly “good, but watch the style - it doesn’t sound like cisneros”.

i have to wonder sometimes, how many voices do you have in your writing - how many voices do you preserve in it? sure, there’s your own, the part that’s ostensibly you, but then your voice was likely influenced by other voices that followed other voices and it leads back from typing at a keyboard to typewriters and ink spattering across the page as someone writes, and maybe it’s that voice you keep in your writing within yours from years and decades and centuries before - and maybe it’ll keep on going. or maybe it’s the voices you don’t want to have that shape the growth and form, so whatever empty form is left behind you can discern the other voices of the time, even if it was the opposing side. idk, fascinated by random things and numbers.

with crap that goes down in fandom, it always looks and feels like you forget the person behind the words, and maybe it’s the same with older works where the author is sometimes faceless, sometimes nameless, and the further back you go, often both. but we are here now and there are faces and there are names and maybe not forever but we have that now and it seems like sometimes, no one bothers.

for a world that’s supposedly so much more connected than it was a century or so ago, some trends, at least, continue. lol maybe it’s one of those great intrinsic human flaws that leads to a mess every damn time. who knows?

the most fun i have writing is when i can forget about the stupid technicalities, forget about how it might look or read to others and just write.

i feel like i need to learn how to write again.

maybe i just want summer back.

…i shudder to think of sparkly vampires being echoed in writing for years to come. of all the things to be preserved. to say nothing of some of what’s going on in politics now.

thinking too much is a bad thing
