1. “I’m broken.” Nino looked over his shoulder, at the man who’s been trying to bring his walls down.
He met Ohno about a month ago at a coffee shop. The older man was a coffee enthusiast and Nino couldn’t quite imagine that scene, seeing how he always looked so sleepy.
“Let me fix you.” Ohno took Nino’s hand with the promise of never letting go.
2. “What is it about coffee that you like it so much?” Nino asked after taking a sip from the bittersweet concoction that Ohno made.
Ohno made another one before he sat across Nino. There was a faint curve on his lips.
“Its warmth,” he paused, looking at the froth atop his drink. “It feels like home.”
Nino smiled in understanding. Every little thing that man did made him feel whole and that everything will always be alright.
He got up to make them both a sandwich. While he was busy looking for ham in his fridge, Ohno prepared the plates and went on ahead to cut the lettuce and tomatoes, and whilst doing so, Nino heard him say what he never thought he’d want to hear from the man.
“You’re my coffee, Nino.”
3. “How long have you known? When did you find out?” Nino’s eyes were welled with tears, and his fists were tightly gripping Ohno’s shirt. He frustratingly rested his head against the man’s neck.
Ohno wrapped his arms around Nino, wishing that the moment wasn’t happening… wishing that it never needed to happen.
“I’m sorry. This was never my intention,” Ohno sobbed, holding Nino tighter.
4. Nino picked up his phone, still not wanting to read the messages Ohno’s been sending him for the past few weeks.
Unknowingly, tears started rolling down his cheeks. He couldn’t take it anymore. He missed the man.
He also needed to be there for him.
Nino pressed call.
“Hey..” Ohno’s voice was weak but he tried to sound cheerful. “I was hoping you’d call.”
“And why didn’t you call?”
Ohno sighed.
“I knew you didn’t want to talk. So I kept on sending messages thinking that you’d call when you’re ready.”
Nino kept silent. He closed his eyes, listening to the man’s breathing on the other line.
“I need you, Nino.”
5. Nino rest his chin on his hand and watched as Ohno sketched his hospital room while he sat up on his bed.
“Are you really watching me draw or are you just staring at me?” Ohno asked jokingly.
“Hm. Either way seems fair to me. Besides, you’re the most handsome man in the building.”
Ohno narrowed his eyes at the man.
“Don’t try to flatter a bald man,” Ohno said, making Nino laugh. He tore a sheet from his sketch pad and gave it to Nino.
To Nino’s surprise, it wasn’t the sketch of the room but of the two of them.
“Cool! That’s me!” Nino said, pointing at himself.
“And that’s me in case you don’t recognize. I had hair back then.”
6. “Satoshi, why didn’t you tell me? Were you scared?”
Nino grabbed a napkin and wipe the side of Ohno’s mouth.
“I was scared that I wouldn’t get the chance to be with you if you knew, considering that you were broken and you wouldn’t let me in. I had to beat my stubborn, selfish self and have you for me.”
Nino nodded, trying to understand. He put down the bowl on the over-bed table.
“I’m sorry, Nino. I didn’t want to break you again.”
“Sshhh.. You fixed me good enough for me to be strong.”
7. Nino was busy arranging his boss’s e-mails when Ohno spoke.
“I’m scared.”
Nino closed his laptop and pulled his chair beside Ohno’s bed. The latter was looking up the ceiling. Nino held his hand and kissed it.
“Don’t be. I’m here.”
Ohno shook his head and turned to Nino.
“I’m scared that when I’m gone, you’ll be sad and you’ll feel alone again. I’m scared that I won’t be there for you when you cry. I’m scared that you might think I left you.”
Nino held Ohno’s cheek.
“Don’t be scared. I’m going to be fine. You.. you just do your best. Knowing that you love me will be enough.”
Ohno lifted his feeble hand to hold Nino’s, kissing his palm.
“I love you, Nino.”
“And I love you, you hot, bald man.”
Nino got up and kissed the top of Ohno’s head.
“Say we be the stubborn people that we are and drink coffee?” Nino whispered.
“The one from the vending machine outside?” Ohno asked, making a disgusted face. “That’s not real coffee. I’m telling you it’s all sugar.”
Nino crossed his arms over his chest and made a smug face.
“You take what you get until your ass is strong enough for us to make the two of us decent cups of coffee.”
Nino leaned to give him a peck on the lips but the man put a hand on his nape and gave him a deep kiss instead. Nino smiled through it, obviously, willingly giving in.
“You’re one smooth man,” Nino said, licking his lips. “And you still taste like coffee.”
“That way you’ll remember me.”
“I really love you. I’ll be right back with our coffee.”
8. “Where are you going this time?”
Nino’s friend and employee, Jun, was on the other end of the line.
“Australia,” Nino replied, he could hear how busy the shop was at this hour. “I’ll be back in two weeks. Are you sure you can handle the shop?”
“Nino, come on.”
He could just imagine the face Jun was making - in disbelief and annoyed.
“It’s like you’re telling me that you don’t trust me.”
Nino chuckled.
“Sorry. I’m just-“
“I know, Nino,” Jun’s tone was much gentler this time. “The coffee shop means a lot to you. I know.”
“Thank you” Nino looked over his shoulder, at the grave of the only man that meant much more than the coffee shop.
End.
