Apparently, chocobo training was harder than it looked - despite having an 'easy to tame' chocobo, Squall's training of the feathered beast didn't seem to be going so well. Since the auction ended and Kay was delivered to Balamb Garden Squall had been spending a lot of time getting to know her, and getting her used to him.
He had now decided to venture outside with her to give her some proper training. The plains outside of Balamb Town seemed the ideal location - plenty of grass, and weak, harmless monsters. Kay, however was having none of it. She wouldn't let him mount her, she fought against her bridle and she kept trying to make a dash for it.
Obviously chocobo training was not one of Squall's talents...
