Still Alive... (another no-content journal post)

Yes, I'm still alive and still using LJ. After a busy trip through the US, I've returned to Alberta in time to do my income taxes. After that... who knows? I may go visit a friend near Edmonton, then head back to Ontario for the summer.

In other news, I got a job doing PHP programming in the evenings. It seems ideal, as it's only part time, ( Read more... )

Brings back memories of my truck driving days seeing all that stuff. It's nice to be able to see other parts of the continent, and even better when you aren't rushed.

You did long haul? How did you manage to fit in sightseeing and driving at the same time? Most of these places are far away from the Interstate highways.

I managed to get to see some neat out of the way places when I was laid over waiting for loads. I'd trailer off and then head off to out of the way places with the truck, overnight and then get my senses back. It was good in that way, just sucked that it was short lived to only part of a day.

Well, now I can pay higher taxes and therefore help support all the unemployed people! Hmmm... I wonder if I can claim them as dependents.

Congrats! :D PHP isn't so bad. I've been writing php for a few years now, though not professionally, haha.

My most-used resource is php.net, they have a pretty comprehensive function list there and it's pretty search-friendly. I would also suggest you get cozy with regular expressions, because preg_match is a pretty awesome function but you gotta speak its language to get the most out of it. :)

I'm hoping to use this new job to segue into writing php/mysql/js/etc professionally. :3

Did you stop by Antelope Slot Canyon while you were in AZ? I've always wanted to go there.

I've been doing C and Perl professionally for quite a few years (plus some C++ and Java), so transitioning into PHP was quite easy. PHP's regular expressions are just a copy of Perl's, which I know quite well. Twenty years ago I worked for a database company, but I've forgotten some of the SQL that I learned.

Sadly, I didn't get as far east as Page; had I seen those photos, I might have made a detour! Wow!

Ahh, gotcha. And yeah, php steals a lot from perl. :)

It steals just enough that I think "I already know how to do this", but doesn't steal enough, making me look up the syntax to see if they've changed the order of parameters.

There are lots of PHP jobs out there... check out Craigslist, guru.com, elance.com, getafreelancer.com, etc. Ironically, I found this job on a furry mailing list. You should be able to find something in Europe!
